No more spending hours, searching for just the right earthenware in markets. You can now choose them from a range of earthenware and order them online. For example, think of a two litre handcrafted earthen handi to greatly enhance your experience of consuming daal, cooked in a natural way. It can be delivered at your doorstep by courier, packed in three layers of covers, to anywhere across the nation. It costs only rupees four hundred & fifty five. These are also available at some super markets and super shoppees.
Why earthenware pots?
Every day, your cooker breaks daal under pressure. The daal loses the taste and its nutritional value to a great extent, in the process. The uric acid in it, later on gradually creates problems in the knees and joints. While an earthen handi cooks the daal in a natural way releasing the Uric acid out. It also retains the original taste. These are some of the reasons why the earthen pots are the in thing in today’s kitchen. Same holds true about other recipes which taste great and retain the aroma plus freshness for a longer period, when cooked in an earthenware.
But, don’t the earthen kitchen vessels consume a lot of heat in the cooking process?
‘No’, says Niraj Kumar, 28, an electrical engineer who is the founder of ‘Mitti aap aur mai’, a Haryana based startup. ‘The range of cooking pots by my start-up, has a especially thinned and porous bottom layer to maintain the fuel usage as against the metal pots,’ he claims.
‘About 95 percent of micro nutrients are lost when cooked in a cooker or a metal pot,’ says Niraj, an ardent follower of late Rajiv Dixit, the proponent of Swadeshi movement and the ancient Indian science. Though he graduated in electrical engineering, Niraj decided to devote his career to a more healthy cooking and eating behaviour in the Indian kitchen. He meant, replacing the stainless steel or aluminum or any such metal pots with quality handcrafted earthenware, created without using any hazardous chemical.
‘Yes, the earthenware handcrafted by potters at ‘Mitti aap aur mai’ are non poisonous, as these are not created in hundreds, using a die and chemicals. These are instead limited edition earthenware that are especially handcrafted by artisans using Desi black, yellow and red soil on traditional pottery wheels. That’s why they are created in a batch of sixty or seventy per day by an artisan and not by a ‘die’ in hundreds. The earthenware may last a year and a half or even more,’ says Niraj Kumar who also designs and markets these.
His elder brother Navin Kumar and his chartered accountant friend Arun Kumar have funded the start-up. Their collective efforts have so far been successful in placing the earthenware in super markets and super shops in Gurugram and Jaipur. Their factory outlet regularly gets curious visitors in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. The urban population, that is fast turning health and immunity conscious is searching for and booking the products online. Without any advertisement campaign, they have been able to cater to two thousand buyers despite the pandemic and the lockdown in just one year.
Earthenware pots: Health benefits, fuel usage
Niraj puts simple yet thought provoking questions to his prospective buyers. Like, if there is no plastic, aluminum or stainless steel in your body, why do you cook and eat in the pots made out of these, thus letting the extracts enter your system? The loss of micronutrients and nutrition value harms our health and the quality of life. All this happens, due to the unjustified urge to save a few minutes of cooking every day. On the other hand, earthenware do not affect the micro nutrients in your meals and instead maintain the PH level.
Neeraj Kumar claims that his range of earthenware is specially made using purest of yellow, black and red soil. The handi and other cooking pots are provided with thin and rough bottom to ensure that the fuel usage is restricted unlike other earthenware.
Before couriering, the products are packed in a triple layer packaging involving bubble wrap, hitlon and then boxed using corrugated ply boards.
The interested buyers can go through the range of products on the website, select and order.
