"Acharya Vishwanath' - The Brazilian engineer turned Vedanta teacher !

Jonas Massetti is a Brazilian Acharya who founded the Vishva Vidya Gurukulam in the country. He was conferred the Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu. The Vedic guru accepted the honour, wearing a white dhoti, tilak, and barefoot. Jonas Masseti   was awarded the Padma shri award,  for his contribution to Literature and education. Padma Shri  is India’s fourth- highest civilian award.

The Brazilian Acharya

 

Jonas Masseti was born in Rio de Janeiro, he worked as a mechanical engineer from the Military Institute of Engineering (IME) and also served in the Brazilian Army for 5 years. He then worked in a company dealing with the stock markets as a consultant of strategic consulting.

 

Although he was earning a good income  and living a very satisfying life in western society, both financially and socially, he felt something missing inside him. He discovered that most of them around him  used sleeping pills and were under a lot of stress. Thus, he was drawn to Yoga and Vedanta. Initially he worked as a yoga teacher and later as his spiritual thought grew , he became a Vedanta teacher.

The guru, also known as Acharya Vishvanath, met the  Indian Prime Minister Shree Narendra Modi in Brazil last year after he attended the G20 Summit and witnessed his group present glimpses of the Hindu religious epic Ramaayan in Sanskrit.

 

An ambassador of Vedic culture.

The Indian government has recognized Jonas Masetti’s contributions to popularizing Vedic culture around the world.

 

Prime Minister http://Narendra Modi acknowledged his work in his  http://Mann ki baat  program, recognizing him as an ambassador of Vedic culture and for making the study of Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita accessible to a large audience in Brazil, reportedly reaching over 150,000 students. Recognizing Masseti’s efforts in spreading Indian culture around the world.

 

The Spiritual search by  ‘Acharya’ 

 

He began his studies of Vedanta in 2004 with Santosh Vallury, an Indian teacher living in Brazil, and continued his studies with Gloria Arieira, a pioneer in teaching Vedanta and Sanskrit in Brazil. In 2006, he first met Swami Dayananda Saraswati during a study trip to the United States.

 

Subsequently, he traveled to India for in-depth studies of Vedanta, Sanskrit and Bhagavad Gita, in a three and a half year residential course  and training at Swami Dayanand Saraswati Ashram ( Arsha Vidya Gurukulam) in Coimbatore. This period completely changed his life. Here, he fully understood the Vedanta philosophy, which earned him the title of ‘Acharya’.

The training at the Ashram led to rebirth of a completely new person and he changed his name to Vishwanath. After spending time there, he said he decided to return home and spread the message of the Vedas in Brazil.

 

 

“There are so many teachers in India that a Westerner doesn’t need to come here and teach their own culture. I see a lot of youngsters losing the opportunity to value their culture and being so enchanted by the Western way of thinking”, he said.

The Institute “Vishva vidya” in Petropolis, Brazil.

 

Jonas Massetti established the institute ” Vishva vidya” in the hills of  Petropolis, Brazil. He offers courses on topics related to Vedanta, Sanskrit, the Bhagavad Gita, meditation, mantras, and other vedic traditions. Where he combines technology and Vedic knowledge  to propagate his message through regular online classes, retreats known as Vedanta Camps, and publications.

 

His teachings cover Vedanta philosophy, the Gita, Sanskrit language, mantras, and other subjects related to the Vedic tradition. He has published several books on Yoga and Vedanta, Upanishads in Portuguese and English.

 

PM Modi had earlier revealed that, through his ‘Free Open Course,’ in just 7 years  Massetti taught Vedic values to more than 1.5 million students  worldwide.

 

His teachings are characterized by clarity, simplicity and a deep respect for Indian tradition. He emphasizes how to apply Vedic knowledge to modern life. He also runs a social project called “Pequena Tribo”(small tribe), to provide spiritual teachings to underprivileged children through sports.
