India Input Desk

Online Scams are so common and frequent these days, that the world has stopped getting surprised anymore. And yet, it is the saddest part that those who get fleeced are mostly the literate people. yes! The learned and the  literate people are usually the victims.

Here is the first part of the most commonly asked questions from the mails that were received by India Input. The CEO madam from the Cyber Edify, have sent the short replies for the Cyber users and the Bank clients, to read & remember.

Online Scams : What if I am to receive money..

Online scamsQuestion 1. What is harm in sharing my UPI PIN when some unknown person says he or she is sending money to me? Afterall, I stand to receive money and not the other way. In the worst possible scenario, i won’t get the money which was never mine, anyway. Is UPI PIN required for receiving money?

Cyber Edify : First things first. The UPI PIN is not required for receiving money. Never forget that, please. Second point. Just ask your self why would some unknown random person want to send you money? it always look fishy to me.  Because, I know one thing, for sure.. there are no free lunches in the world. Don’t lose your common sense if someone is talking confidently, offering something attractive to you or trying to allure you, financially. Remember, there are no free lunches.

And, in the worst possible scenario, they won’t leave a penny in your account. Yes. And, even if you believe that, someone is indeed sincerely trying to send you money, ask yourself this first.. Honestly, why would be the UPI PIN required to send you the money? That it self means, his or her intentions are not trustworthy. He or she is simply not a genuine benefactor. If you share the PIN, your account may be emptied in seconds. That is most likely, for sure.

Online Scams : What if I share the OTP..

Online scamsQuestion 2 : Okay, If I am being asked by this telecaller and if I decide to give it a try and indeed share the OTP to receive money.. that is, some random reward money from this tele caller..or his website?

Cyber Edify : Never share OTP/PIN/Card details with anyone. Never ever. Nothing of it is required.
Before using any OTP always read the OTP SMS carefully to ascertain its purpose.
Never share your financial details on social media apps or unknown links or forms.

Online Scams : Is it my bank calling..

Question 3 : What if my bank is indeed asking for my bank details? How do I know the caller is genuine or fake?

Online scamsCyber Edify : Never respond to unsolicited calls from banks asking for your personal or banking details. Because, banks will never ask you this.

Online Scams : How do I verify..

Question 4 : How do I authenticate whether the call I just received from my bank was genuine or otherwise? How do I call my bank to ascertain, if I am travelling somewhere else, or busy somewhere else?

Cyber Edify : Always carry the personal banking number, whatsapp banking number or customer care number of your bank saved in your mobile phone and also get it written somewhere in your small personal diary, that you always carry when outside home or office.

If you are looking for the personal banking number, whatsapp banking number or customer care number of your bank, try not to rely on any random information from the internet. Because, the internet is full of scamsters, who have provided fake numbers and laid traps for you to walk in. Better ask that info to your bank, personally. Or, if you can’t visit your bank or call your bank, try to find it on the official website of your bank or the online banking website of your bank or your debit or credit card  or your pass book or try looking in your ATM slip.

Question 5 : What is the quickest way to contact the bank, in such situations?

Cyber Edify : Prepare for that in advance. If you haven’t already, remember to get these details when you visit your bank next time. The quickest way to get in touch with your bank is to call them on the toll free number provided by the bank, and not collected from the internet. Another option is to get their Customer care WhatsApp number and keep in touch with them.

Question 6 : How to register a complaint against the online scams or frauds…or call an official helpline

Cyber Edify : To report an online scam, it is best to utilize the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. This portal, managed by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), is the designated platform for lodging complaints related to cybercrimes, including financial fraud. You can also call the helpline number 1930 for assistance.
