On Monday local aviator Terry Godeser said he saw a Facebook post Sunday (March 23, 2025) night calling for people to help search for the missing plane, which did not have a locator beacon, and he discovered the crash site.
In a social media post early Monday (March 24, 2025), John Morris implored people to help search for his son and granddaughters, saying they were late returning from a Sunday (March 23, 2025) afternoon flight.
#Alaska has few roads, leaving many communities to rely on small airplanes to get around.
On Monday, local aviator Terry Godeser, who had come across the search on social media, discovered the crash site. He reported to ABC News, “It broke my heart to see it, but as I got closer, I could see three people sitting on the wing.
“They were alive and responsive and moving around,” Mr. Godeser said, adding that they waved at him

A small aircraft has crashed into a lake on the Kenai Peninsula, leaving the pilot and his two daughters missing for several hours. Family and friends of the missing individuals rallied on social media, desperately seeking information about their whereabouts. Then came the astonishing news: John Morris and his daughters were found alive.
#ALASKA A pilot and his two young daughters survived on the wing of a plane for about 12 hours after it crashed and was partially submerged in an icy Alaska lake, then were rescued after being spotted by a good Samaritan.
The plane, a Piper PA-12, had crashed in a glacial meltwater lake, presenting a daunting situation for the occupants. The girls’ grandfather, also named John, expressed immense gratitude towards the Kenai community for their remarkable support during the rescue efforts, stating, “I can finally breathe again; I have air in my lungs once more.”
The three were rescued on the eastern edge of Tustumena Lake on March 24, 2025 by the Alaska Army National Guard after Terry Godeser alerted other searching pilots.
Pilot and 2 young daughters survive the night on airplane wing after crashing into icy Alaska lake!

This incredible story unfolded when the family was on a scenic flight aboard a meticulously restored Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, traveling from Soldotna to Skilak Lake. The plane crashed under still-unknown circumstances, landing on the frozen surface of a glacial meltwater lake in Alaska.
After piercing through the ice, the aircraft became partially submerged in the frigid waters. The survivors managed to escape onto the wings and endured a harrowing twelve-hour wait in the freezing conditions.
Mr. Godeser said many miracles were at play, from the plane not sinking, to the survivors being able to stay atop the wing, to them surviving nighttime temperatures dipping into the 20s (subzero Celsius).
As efforts to locate the missing individuals intensified, multiple aircraft were deployed to search for them, with the Alaska National Guard joining the operation. A faint cell phone signal suggested the wreckage was near Tustumena Lake and the Kenai Mountains.

The plane was located approximately 55 kilometers from its intended destination. Aerial footage revealed the aircraft partially submerged in the icy lake. All three individuals were successfully rescued and transported to a local hospital. Details regarding the cause of the crash or the health status of the survivors remain scarce; however, they are reportedly out of immediate danger.
Witness Godeser noted that they appeared alert and responsive, waving at him as he approached to call for help.!
