#EV Battery Degradation is a question, that every buyer dreads. It is a frequent query heard among EV circles. Does it happen? Let’s discuss the scenario about one of the top in demand EVs, that is Nexon EV. Lets also have a look at the The Best Practices for LFP Charging & Key Tips to Maximise Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Life in this article.
#EV Battery Degradation may be for real. However, it can be stopped. Rather, you may slightly improve the performance, say owners.
This may surprise many.. but, there are Nexon EV owners who provide data confirming remarkable battery health and offer essential advice on how to maintain the long-term performance of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery chemistry..based on their own experience.
#EV Battery Degradation? Contrary to that, in fact!
The experiences include a 16 per cent charge after a taxing 250 km drive, with an estimated remaining range of 49 km. This means, a total potential usage of slightly more than 300 km and it is a pleasant news for wannabe buyers. Crucially, the owners report zero battery degradation after a little over two years of ownership. In fact, the effective range slightly exceeds 300 km, which is an improvement over the initial 275 to 280 km range observed when the car was purchased. This improved range is attributed to better driving efficiency and adherence to proper charging practices. This positive finding is echoed by other owners, including one user who reported maintaining the original range even after driving over 77000 km.
#EV Battery : LFP Management with 2 Golden Rules
The secret to maintaining this excellent range lies in adhering to charging protocols specific to LFP batteries, which are used in Tata’s electric vehicles. The owners stress that these important practices are often not adequately stressed by dealers.
The first and most critical rule is to avoid “opportunity charging”, say happy owners.
What is an opportunity charging? It is the common practice where a driver performs short, partial charges—for example, plugging the car in at 60 percent battery and unplugging it at 80 percent—without letting the car reach a full 100 percent charge. LFP batteries do not favor this approach, and continuous opportunity charging can lead to calibration errors and potential issues with the battery management system.
The two best practices for LFP longevity are:
- Charge Fully to 100 Percent: LFP batteries must be charged fully to 100 percent to ensure the BMS (Battery Management System) is calibrated correctly. This full charge facilitates necessary cell balancing within the battery pack, which is vital for long-term health and accuracy.
2. Drain Substantially Before Charging: Before initiating a full charge, the battery should be drained down sufficiently. The happy owners make it a routine practice to charge the car when the battery level has fallen below 25 percent, usually between 15 and 25 percent. Additionally, a deeper drain down to approximately seven or eight percent is performed once every four or five months to ensure maximum accuracy and performance.
Following these specific LFP charging protocols ensures that degradation remains minimal and that owners can achieve excellent range throughout the vehicle’s life.
