Is the EV maintenance zero, as you often hear the salesguys and girls claim proudly? In fact that is the catch many often fall for. Why do you must check the tyre pressure every two weeks?

So, lets decode these aspects here. Everyone says that EV maintenance is almost zero, but is that true? The reality is that EVs do really require lesser maintenance, but if you neglect it, it affects the range, battery health, and braking of your EV. Though the EVs do not have the engine oil or the issues related to it.. what is the role the coolant plays in EVs? What is the 80-20 rule to take the proper care of the EV’s heart (and its lifespan), that is the EV battery? What do they mean when experts say, that the EVs are like smartphones on wheels? Or, that the EVs have regenerative braking?

Here are top 6 Do It Yourself tips to learn the top EV maintenance. These DIY tips are in fact, simple things you can do at home to keep your EV in a new -like condition.

#EV Maintenance : Tip 1. Tyre Pressure and Wheel Care

EVs are generally  almost 200 to 300 kg heavier than the internal combustion engine (ICE) cars due to the battery pack. This extra weight puts more pressure on the tyres, so ignoring tyre pressure can be a big mistake, you mustn’t make. Check tyre pressure once every two weeks.

A low tyre pressure can reduce your range by 3 to 5%, and tyre life can decrease by 20% due to uneven wear.

Here is a simple tip to address this issue. Buy a digital tyre pressure gauge (it may cost around ₹500 to ₹1000) and check the pressure yourself.

Due to regenerative braking, you may observe uneven wear and tear on the rear tyres. Therefore, tyre rotation every 10,000 km is quite beneficial

#EV Maintenance : Tip 2. Coolant and Brake Fluid Check

EVs do not have engine oil, but they do have coolant to keep the battery and motor temperatures safe. Overheating causes battery degradation, which leads to range loss. What does this mean?

It simply means this. Make sure to get the coolant level and brake fluid checked at a service station every 10,000 km.

For EVs that use liquid-cooled battery packs, like the Tata Nexon and MG ZS EV, coolant top-up and replacement should follow the OEM manual’s schedule. It is generally recommended to change it once every two or three years.

#EV Maintenance : Tip 3. Battery Health and Charging Habit

Every EV owner must never forget that the EV battery is its “heart“. To maintain its lifespan, always remember the 80/20 rule.

Do not let the battery discharge to 0%, and do not charge it to 100% every time. There is a scientific reason for this: a stress is put on the Lithium-ion cells at the extreme ends of charging. Chemical stability is best in the mid-range. Charging from 20% to 80% is perfect for city driving. Only do a full charge when you are planning a long trip.

Here’s a Pro Tip: Do not charge using a high-speed DC charger every day. This is because, frequent DC charging accelerates battery degradation, especially in hot weather.

#EV Maintenance : Tip 4. Software Updates and Diagnostics

EVs are like smartphones on wheels, which means software updates are as important as mechanical service.

OEMs like Tata, BYD, MG, and Tesla provide regular Over-The-Air (OTA) updates. These updates include bug fixes and improvements to the battery management and regenerative braking logic.

When you receive an update option, install it immediately, as it will positively affect your range. If you feel your performance is dropping (reduced range or weaker regenerative braking), get a quick diagnostic test. Most OEMs show the battery health percentage in their app.

#EV Maintenance : Tip 5. Brake, Suspension, and Cabin Care

EVs have regenerative braking, which means the motor’s energy is recovered when you press the brake. As a result, brake pads last two to three times longer than in ICE cars.

The small issue is rust on the brake discs if your car is not driven often and remains parked.

Now, what is the solution? The Solution is here : Manually press the brake pedal once a week to rub the rust off.

Cabin Care: EV sensors, cameras, and air filters are more sensitive. Regularly clean the dashboard and vents, and replace the cabin air filter every 15,000 km.

#EV Maintenance : Tip 6. Additional Tips

1. Do not over-inflate the tyres thinking it will increase range, as over-inflation increases braking distance.

2. When washing your EV, do not hit the lower area of the battery with a high-pressure jet; use a gentle water stream

3. Park your EV in the shade. Parking in direct sunlight during hot weather slightly accelerates battery degradation.

In conclusion, EV maintenance is not zero; it is smart. If you follow these small DIY habits, your EV’s battery life, range, and performance will all improve. Keep in touch with http://www.indiainput.com for more such information and updates that no one told you before!
