The promoters
Those who know Sachin Palsokar, a Chemical engineer from LIT, Nagpur and Sneha Palsokar, a professional architect from VNIT, Nagpur, share two interesting aspects about the ambitious and hardworking couple. Due to their excellent academic background, they were time and again advised by near and dear ones to accept the offers from the US based companies and shift for a better future. But, they didn’t yield because they found the idea of ‘earning dollars in India’ more attractive. Sachin jokingly remarks, ‘Much before Make in India became practical, trendy & fashionable, it was actually considered suicidal. When we decided to leave our respective work for this, many of our well wishers had the look of concern in their eyes.’
Q. India Input researched to find out you had conducted the first trial of your products in your college laboratory. Many today would think it as impossible, something that can not happen.
SP : It can happen. If you want to succeed, you must try to find ways and be willing to walk extra miles for the goal. When we began, there were no lab or Incubation Centres available except the one lab in our College LIT. I decided to conduct the first trial there only. From lab scale, we could go large scale. Those were the times when start-up wasn’t a buzz word. There were no incubation centers. There was hardly any place to turn to. Waiting for another lab would have meant waste of time and opportunities. Whatever matters for success should be done.
After the pilot project in 2002, batch production bloomed from 10 square feet per day to 10 thousand square feet per day. Today, we are headquartered in Mumbai and our production plant is logistically well located in Nagpur. We launched international operations in 2016. We have our footprints in USA , Dubai and so many other places, ‘Shinex’ is the largest glass mosaic manufacturer in south asia, today offering complete range of mosaic solutions from swimming pool glass mosaic to hand cut mural wall coverings and Luxury bathroom glass mosaic.
Q. You have seen success and failures. Ups and downs. How did you learn your lessons and guided your own selves?
SP : Nothing goes to waste in this world. Success brings awards and rewards. Failure brings lessons to be learnt. Unfortunately, we do not discuss failures in our society. Neither freely, nor secretly. The stigma or fear associated with failure is so huge, that it makes us lead our lives under societal pressure and fear of failure..making us remain behind and never take giant leaps ahead. This seals our fate and stamps it permanently. We have to evolve by dissociating the stigma from failure and discussing it with an open mind. Failures are ok. They may come and go. It’s ok if they visit you on your journey towards your goal. Never lose the lesson.
Q. Any particular source, you drew inspiration from?
SP : All of us have read at least some pages of our glorious history. But we tend to forget it all. We have read how Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj thought and devised strategies. Odds were high against him, all through his life. And still, he emerged victorious every time. If we find ourselves pitted against a formidable challenge, can we devise ways similar to his guerrilla warfare? Why can’t we? I have followed this and it ensured my success. Similarly lives and times of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Veer Savarkar, Mahatma Gandhi have so much to offer. We must turn to these for ideas and clues.
And when a banking glitch made them suffer !
Another aspect about the ‘Shinex’ phenomenon is the daunting challenges and gigantic hurdles they were forced to negotiate by their bank despite showing growth and being regular in paybacks. Asked about that rough phase, Mr Sachin Palsokar laughs it away.
Q. For a glitch in the banking sector, you were made to suffer for years, though it wasn’t your fault. Still, it didn’t deter your growth story. How could you achieve the positive frame of mind in the impossible circumstances? What message would you like to put across to the budding entrepreneurs from this experience?
SP :
‘See, I am too busy currently in basking in the fabulous growth story, to dwell upon that challenging phase. Maybe someday, I shall write a book. Just may be. Not to brag about our achievements during those times, but just because identifying and exposing such negativity in our system is very much needed. Such glitches keep threatening our start-up ecosystem. Our younger generation of innovators and entrepreneurs should not be made to go through situations that we had to, for no fault of ours. But yes, the crisis could be blown away by our positivity, approach to stay in the situation & fight back, strategically planned responses, sheer determination and hard work. And of course, the ever imaginative and innovative range of our products, our commitment to professionalism, time as well as quality. Most importantly, We were fortunate to have been backed by the best enterprising Investor and good people in the business. And all of this was and still is supplemented by the trust of our steadily rising number of associates , clients and employees. ‘
Q. : And the biggest compliment so far?
SP :
‘The support by our workforce which has women workers in majority. They were considered unemployable but Shinex gave them opportunity and confidence. They are now breadwinners of their families. Their family members are so proud of them. Equally valuable for us is the smile on the client’s face. The positive feedback that we keep getting from every single customer. Can there be any better encouragement ? No.’
Q. : What percentage of your clients keep repeating glass mosaic art works?
SP :
‘Almost all of them . That’s where most of the growth lies. Every time our work invokes a ‘wow’ or a a smile, or an inquisitive enquiry, our time spent on research in the designs or allied hard-work gets richly paid. When the builders, architects and interior designers come back to our network with newer orders and projects, we hardly get the time to rejoice. But, the testimonials make us smile and happier every day. All of these keep propelling us further to newer goals. And yes, one can never forget the recognition brought by the awards’
Recognition & awards
The annual mega ET AceTech exhibition on Delhi’s Pragati Maidan has about 3.5 thousand exhibitors. All big brands in building materials are present there, every year. Shinex achieved the unthinkable by bagging the third prize there in 2018-19 and the first prize in 2019-20.
