Indian Navy's New 'Floating' F-35s and F-34s Showcase "Make in India" Defense Prowess

#F-35 : The Indian Navy’s “Floating” Marvel, ‘Make in India’ defence initiative. In a significant stride towards self-reliance in defense, the Indian Navy has commissioned two advanced multi-mission stealth frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri. During the commissioning ceremony, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh made a notable statement, referring to the new warships as India’s “floating F-35s,” a subtle yet powerful comparison to the American fifth-generation fighter jet.
This reference highlights not the physical likeness, but the state-of-the-art, indigenous technology and stealth capabilities integrated into the frigates. The commissioning of these ships marks a major milestone for the “Make in India” initiative, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess in naval shipbuilding.

The Indian Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh addressed on the occasion “Aatmanirbharta is no longer just a slogan, it is becoming a ground reality. INS Udaygiri & INS Himgiri are shining examples of Government’s self-reliance resolve. We are strengthening the Armed Forces under the futuristic vision.”
“The commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri not only strengthens the Navy’s combat potential but reinforces its role as a ‘First Responder’ and ‘Preferred Security Partner’ in the Indian Ocean Region. From combating piracy, fighting against smuggling and illegal trafficking, curbing maritime terrorism, or providing relief after a natural disaster, these warships will prove to be a game-changer in complex and risky operations.” Rajnath Singh further added.
“India does not believe in aggressive expansionism. We never attack any country or provoke anyone. But, this doesn’t mean we bow before those who mean to harm us. When our security is threatened, we know how to give a befitting reply. Innocent civilians were killed in Pahalgam. We gave an effective, measured and precise response through Operation Sindoor. We pledged to destroy terrorist hideouts and successfully achieved our goals.” The Indian Defense minister added.
“I want to reiterate that the operation is not over, it is merely a pause. Today, the entire nation is united against terrorism under the leadership of PM Modi, and this national unity, discipline, sacrifice & dedication are our real strength.” He states.
The frigates, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, boast over seventy five percent indigenous content. This impressive level of local manufacturing involves hundreds of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), creating jobs and fostering a robust domestic defense ecosystem.

INS Udaygiri is the one hundredth ship to be designed by the bureau, a symbolic achievement in the Navy’s five-decade-long journey towards self-sufficiency.
These vessels are equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced weapons and sensors, including supersonic BrahMos missiles, long-range surface-to-air missiles, and an Integrated Platform Management System. Their stealth features, such as reduced radar cross-section and improved acoustic dampening, make them difficult to detect at sea, reinforcing the Indian Navy’s role as a formidable force in the Indian Ocean Region.
