Fadnavis Fires Up Davos: Maharashtra’s Investment Blitz! In a riveting NDTV interview conducted at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis outlined the state’s remarkable achievements in attracting investments and fostering innovation.
The discussion, set against the backdrop of the Maharashtra Pavilion, highlighted how the state is positioning itself as a global leader in economic development, sustainability, and technological advancement. With nearly 85 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) signed during the event, Fadnavis emphasized Maharashtra’s strategic role in India’s growth trajectory.

A centerpiece of the conversation was the Raigad Pen Smart City project, dubbed the “third Mumbai.” This ambitious initiative has secured Rs 1 lakh crore in investments from five countries: the US, Singapore, Australia, the Netherlands, and the UAE.

Designed as a new-age business district comparable to Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), it incorporates advanced mobility solutions and environmental safeguards. Fadnavis noted that all clearances are in place, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) partnering in a public-private model to ensure rapid execution.

Another highlight was the launch of an Innovation City near Navi Mumbai Airport, in collaboration with Tata Sons. Tata Chairman N Chandrasekaran has committed $11 billion for data centers and supporting infrastructure, aiming to create a “plug-and-play” ecosystem for global innovators.

Fadnavis proudly declared Maharashtra as India’s data center capital, holding 60% of the nation’s capacity and attracting 80% of foreign direct investment (FDI) in this sector. He addressed competition from states like Andhra Pradesh, stressing that Maharashtra prioritizes credibility and policy strength over incentives.

Sustainability took center stage with the announcement of Mumbai’s circular economy model. This initiative aims to convert all forms of waste—solid, liquid, and electronic—into wealth, enhancing air and water quality. Partnering with Tata Sons, the plan involves stakeholders to achieve a 100% circular framework, aligning with global environmental goals.
Politically, Fadnavis celebrated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) recent municipal election sweep, securing 1,400 out of 2,800 seats across 29 corporations, including a 70% strike rate in Mumbai. He viewed this as a mandate for “triple engine” governance and immediate action on promises, such as reserving the Mumbai Mayor post.
Drawing from Davos panels on responsible AI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), Fadnavis shared insights from international leaders. He highlighted the UAE’s zero-bureaucracy target and Germany’s AI ethics integration as models for Maharashtra’s reforms. The CM also mentioned strategic partnerships, like with the Netherlands’ Institute of Geology for Mumbai’s tunneling projects and MIT’s lab for MedTech startups.
Overall, Fadnavis portrayed Davos as a platform for tangible outcomes, not mere showmanship. With FDI inflows and hyperscaler engagements from companies like Microsoft and NTT Data, Maharashtra is set to drive India’s journey from a $5 trillion to a $20 trillion economy. This interview underscores the state’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth, signaling a promising future amid global challenge.
