FREE WI-FI: PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ONLINE TRAPS & THREATS!

"Many lunches are not free..!" cautions Aishwarya Tiwari, Cyber Security Awareness Expert.

Free Wi-FiFree Wi-Fi is an irresistible offer that is fashionable and a glamorous trend, too. It is an invitation of a freebee idea that is too hard to ignore. When at a public place, a restaurant, a mall or a multiplex, people tend to log in to the Free Wi-Fi network. Young and old, students and experts, professionals and individuals ..all are connected  to Mobile internet, hotspots or Free Wi-Fi. They tend to rely on these connections for work, study, and better connectivity.

However, issues like the  quality of connectivity, higher use of data every day, besides the ever-rising prices of internet plans, driven by the advancements such as the introduction of 5G technology, have become a significant concern. Free Wi-Fi availability addresses this concern.

Often, there are no free lunches, reminds Cyber Security Awareness Expert Miss. Aishwarya Tiwari. Read on..

The escalating cost of internet plans can be frustrating for individuals, particularly when their data allowance is quickly exhausted. Consequently, people often find themselves drawn to the allure of free Wi-Fi and similar alternatives.
I recall, when I got my first smartphone, how tough it was to download all the apps or keep them updated because the 1 GB of data allotted each day quickly ran out. During my adolescent exuberance, I was often swept away by the thrill of seeking out free Wi-Fi, eagerly using it to update my phone, download various content, and indulge in the endless possibilities of the internet. Unmindful of the potential consequences, I would impulsively connect to any available free public Wi-Fi without considering the security of the connection, its impact on my mobile phone, or the potential risks to my privacy.
It is not just limited to the teenage years; people of all ages may use open Wi-Fi networks due to their mischievous nature or if they are unaware of certain consequences. It is not an uncommon practice.  Well, to start with, do you know if free Wi-Fi and public Wi-Fi are the same thing or not?
FREE WI-FI AND PUBLIC WI-FI
Public Wi-Fi is a term used to describe wireless networks that are available to the general public in certain establishments including clubs, cafes, libraries, airports, hotels and restaurants. Usually, businesses or organizations offer these networks for the convenience of their clients or guests. The password for public Wi-Fi networks is typically password-protected, so users must ask venue workers for it or look it up on a sign within the
building.
Free Wi-Fi
A FREE LUNCH, OFTEN, IS A MIRAGE!
Free Wi-Fi, on the other hand, refers to wireless networks that do not require any payment for access. It can be provided in various settings, including public places, but it can also be found in private locations like homes or offices. Free Wi-Fi networks may or may not be password-protected, depending on the preferences of the network owner.
While many public Wi-Fi networks are indeed free, not all free Wi-Fi networks are necessarily public. For example, someone may have a Wi-Fi network in their home that they offer freely to their guests or neighbors. In this case, it is free Wi-Fi but not a public Wi-Fi network.
FREE WI-FI: A FREE LUNCH MAY BE A MIRAGE!
The fact must not be overlooked, that using public or free Wi-Fi networks can come with security risks. Since these networks are open to the public, it is important to exercise caution when accessing sensitive information or transmitting personal data over such networks. It is recommended to use a virtual private network (VPN) or take other security measures to protect your privacy and data while using public or free Wi-Fi networks.
It is a natural tendency for people to actively look for or be attracted to sales, discounts, and other deals, as well as to be tempted by the idea of getting something for free. Take a look at a prevalent public Wi-Fi instance.
Nowadays, everyone enjoys taking vacations, and most people reserve their hotel rooms before travelling. What features entice us to book a hotel room? The price of lodging, reviews and ratings, the standard of the hotel, and other facilities like free breakfast and parking are all important considerations. However, public Wi-Fi is  the most sought-after amenity, among these. If you find yourself in locations where network issues are common, it is highly likely that you will be compelled to rely on the Wi-Fi provided by the hotel, hostel, or lodge where you are staying.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF?
Free Wi-Fi
Avoiding the allurement of a Free Wi-Fi can be the better option!
What if, during your stay or anywhere on vacation, you need to send important data, like office work or money transfers for bill payments or large transactions to someone far away? In such situations, you might feel compelled to use the public Wi-Fi, but is it entirely safe? What precautions can one take in these circumstances?
Firstly, it’s highly recommended to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN): A VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it more secure and protecting your data from potential hackers.
Other precautions to consider are:
Keep your devices and apps up to date with the latest security patches to minimize vulnerabilities.
Disable automatic Wi-Fi connections on your device to avoid connecting to potentially insecure networks without your knowledge.
Avoid sensitive activities like conducting important transactions or accessing personal accounts with sensitive information while on public Wi-Fi.
Ensure to use HTTPS websites, as they provide a more secure connection compared to “http://” sites.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) wherever possible to add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
Turn off file sharing and AirDrop (especially for iOS devices) to prevent unauthorized access to your files.
Whenever possible, use your cellular data for sensitive activities to ensure a safer online experience.
By following these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risks associated with using public or free Wi-Fi and protect your data from potential threats.

NETWORK ISSUES & FREE WI-FI

Another incident that can very much possibly happen is when you visit malls or shopping stores; it’s most common to face network issues. Whether it’s a store of a big brand or a small one, they are ready to offer you the password to their public Wi-Fi for you to make your payment (Please do consider carrying the cash!).

In such situations, what can any person think? “Oh, come on, it’s such a trustworthy brand, and so many people buy stuff from here and also use the Wi-Fi. What harm can happen if I use their Wi-Fi, too?” Or a person in a rush to make a quick payment, agrees, without hesitation, to use their Wi-Fi.

Now, I am not saying that all these malls or stores intentionally ask customers to use their Wi-Fi, nor do they even monitor it. However, there can be any mischievous employee or any other individual who may take advantage of such situations for their mischievous agenda.

In conclusion, using public or free Wi-Fi can expose your data to potential risks. To stay safe, always exercise caution when connecting to such networks. Avoid sensitive transactions, use secure websites, and be mindful of the potential for malicious activities. Prioritize your online security by following the recommended precautions. Stay vigilant and protect your data while staying connected on the go.

So, I suggest – better be safe! What do you say?
