India Unveils 2nm Chip Design, Boosts Semiconductor Mission. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced at the NDTV World Summit 2025 that India has successfully achieved the capability to design 2-nanometer semiconductor chips, positioning the country among the world’s most advanced chip innovators. Building on earlier successes in developing 5nm and 7nm technology, this breakthrough was driven by the government’s collaboration with global semiconductor leader Arm at a new facility in Bengaluru.

The minister highlighted that this advancement represents a major leap under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) — a national initiative aimed at developing a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem. The ISM has so far approved 10 projects worth ₹1.6 lakh crore, with a strong emphasis on human capital development. The program aims to train 85,000 engineers and researchers to fuel India’s growing chip design and manufacturing capabilities.

Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that while domestic chip manufacturing is expected to commence by the end of 2025, full-scale 2nm production will begin once the five semiconductor fabrication units currently under construction become operational.

This progress is also expected to substantially reduce India’s $20 billion annual chip import bill, contributing to the country’s technological sovereignty and economic resilience.
