Justice for Anjel Chakma: The Fatal Cost of Racial Prejudice

My Country, My People, My Respect

Justice for Anjel Chakma: The Fatal Cost of Racial Prejudice. “I am an Indian. What certificate should I show?” These were the final, desperate words of 24-year-old MBA student Anjel Chakma before a routine grocery run turned into a fatal confrontation at Dehradun. His death on December 26, after a 17-day battle in the ICU, has ripped off the bandage on a festering wound: the systemic targeting of North Eastern citizens in their own country.

While local authorities initially termed the incident “banter,” the brutal stabbing—triggered by slurs like Chinki and Chinese—has sparked a national firestorm. As protests erupt from Agartala to New Delhi, Anjel’s tragedy serves as a haunting reminder that in 2025, the cost of racial prejudice is still being paid in blood.

One People, One Blood: End the War on Our Own Citizens

The death of Anjel Chakma is a harrowing reminder that “casual” racism can have fatal consequences. For too long, citizens from the North Eastern states have faced systemic discrimination in their own country. Whether through subtle exclusion or overt slurs, this behavior undermines the very foundation of Indian democracy.

We Are One Nation India is a mosaic of ethnicities. A person from Mizoram or Arunachal Pradesh is as Indian as someone from Maharashtra or Punjab. Using racial slurs is an attempt to “other” our own people, stripping them of their identity and belonging. When we allow words like Chinki to be used under the guise of humor or “banter,” we validate the prejudice that eventually leads to violence.

The Responsibility of Respect Respect is not a courtesy; it is a fundamental duty of every citizen. The North East is not just a geographical periphery; it is a cultural powerhouse and a strategic pillar of our nation. To target someone based on their facial features or dialect is an act of cowardice that weakens the national fabric.

A Call for Change Justice for Anjel Chakma must involve more than just legal proceedings; it requires a societal shift. We must foster an environment where diversity is celebrated rather than mocked. Educational institutions and local communities must actively work to dismantle these biases.

Every Indian deserves to feel safe, respected, and at home in every corner of India. It is time to stop the hate, recognize our shared heritage, and ensure that no other family loses a son to the poison of prejudice.

Report Hate: If you witness racial harassment, do not be a bystander. Document and report it to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
