India’s retaliatory strikes followed Pakistan’s attempted targeting of 26 Indian locations, including air force bases in Udhampur, Pathankot, and Adampur, on the night of May 9–10.

A DGMO is responsible for planning and overseeing military operations, including combat missions and counter-terrorism efforts. Ensuring that the armed forces remain prepared for any kind of operation is a key part of the job.

The strikes at Nur Khan and Sargoda airbase sparked a chatter that the IAF might well have made an indicative strike at Kirana Hills to tell Pakistan that not only that the forces know everything, they also have the capability to strike anywhere in Pakistan. However, Air Marshal AK Bharti junked all chatter about any Indian hit at Kirana Hills. His smile when he said, “Thank you for telling us that Kirana Hills houses some nuclear installations. We did not know about it,” was noticeable. The smile was infectious for Indians.

As part of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force conducted precision night raids on nine terror hideouts across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes targeted key infrastructure belonging to banned terror outfits including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

In a pre-dawn operation on May 10, the Indian Air Force (IAF) struck 11 military sites deep inside Pakistan using air-launched precision weapons in a follow-up to Pakistan’s attempt to target Indian airbases. India’s precision missile strikes on 10 key Pakistani airbases, included the strategically vital Nur Khan base near the Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawa.

The Kirana Hills is known to be a reservation of Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence. It is believed that reinforced caves within the mountains are one of the sites of where the Pakistani military stores its nuclear warhead.Among the precise targets hit were the Markaz Subhan Allah at Bahawalpur, Sarjal at Tehra Kalan, Markaz Abbas in Kotli, and Syedna Bilal camp in Muzaffarabad, all linked to the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Additionally, Makaz Raheel Shahid in Kotli and Mehmoona Joya in Sialkot, belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen, were also hit. Of the nine targets, four were located in Pakistan and five in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, India and Pakistan announced a bilateral agreement to halt all firings and military operations across land, air, and sea, effective immediately. The ceasefire announcement followed US-mediated talks, with President Donald Trump confirming that both nations had agreed to a “full and immediate” cessation of hostilities.

Social media has been abuzz with chatter on how Kirana Hills might have been hit in India’s Operation Sindoor. Handles have shared images, videos and maps claiming a blast at the Kirana Hills in Sargoda district of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

“Thank you for telling us that Kirana Hills houses some nuclear installations. We did not know about it,” Director General of India’s Air Operations, Air Marshal AK Bharti said in a light-hearted manner when asked if Kirana Hills were hit.

Then came the serious part of the answer.

“We have not hit Kirana Hills, whatever is there. I did not brief in my briefing yesterday,” said Air Marshal Bharti.

India carried out strikes on terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) on May 7 after terrorists on April 22 killed 26 people in Kashmir’s Pahalgam. Though India targeted terror camps, highlighting that its forces stayed away from military and civilian areas. However, Pakistan attacked Indian military and civilian areas with mortar shells, drones and missiles. In its counter-attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) struck 11 military sites deep inside Pakistan using air-launched precision weapons.

The targets included critical airbases in Rafiqui, Murid, Nur Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, Chunian, Pasrur, and Sialkot, according to India’s Ministry of Defence. The attack on Nur Khan military base near Rawalpindi, the headquarters of Pakistan’s military establishment, is the most significant.

The strike on Nur Khan airbase in Chaklala, near Rawalpindi, carried significant strategic weight. The base is home to Pakistan’s main transport squadrons and vital for logistical and strategic airlift operations, housing aircraft like C-130 Hercules and IL-78 mid-air refuelers. More critically, Nur Khan lies in close proximity to the headquarters of the Strategic Plans Division, the body overseeing Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

The New York Times quoted a former US official familiar with Pakistan’s nuclear programme, noting, “Pakistan’s deepest fear is of its nuclear command authority being decapitated. The missile strike on Nur Khan could have been interpreted… as a warning that India could do just that.”

Satellite imagery also indicated a strike on the runway of Mushaf airbase in Sargodha. This base is reportedly linked to underground nuclear storage sites beneath the Kirana Hills and was struck with multiple loitering penetrating munitions.

Sargoda air base hit

Pakistan has tried to leverage its nuclear status against India. While India follows a no-first-use policy when it comes to nuclear weapons, Pakistan doesn’t have any such stated policy of restraint. A look at online map of the Kirana Hills area reveals a bed of construction amid the brown and green of the hills. At Khushab, 200 km south of Islamabad, there are four heavy water reactors dedicated to production of weapons-grade plutonium,” according to a report in World Nuclear Association that was updated in February 2025.

#Kirana Hills is a highly fortified military zone known for its underground nuclear infrastructure, Colonel Vinayak Bhat (Retd), wrote for The Print in November 2017. Covering an area of nearly 68 sq km and encircled by a 39-km perimeter, the Kirana Hills facility is designed with a multi-layered defence system.

In addition to Nur Khan, other bases hit included Rafiqui in Shorkot (Jhang district), Murid in Chakwal, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian in Kasur. Airbases in Skardu, Bholari, Jacobabad, and Sargodha also suffered extensive damage. Notably, the Mushaf airbase in Sargodha is said to be linked to the Kirana Hills.
