Madurai Kartighai Deepam Ritual Snuffed: High Court Defied!!

Detentions, Alternate Flames, Supreme Court Clash

Madurai Kartighai Deepam Ritual halted. On December 4, police at Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai imposed prohibitory orders, blocking Hindu devotees from lighting the traditional stone lamp pillar  (kuti vilakku) near the historic Subramaniyaswamy Temple—a practice steeped in centuries of religious tradition. This move came despite multiple directives from the Madras High Court earlier that week, which had explicitly ordered that the lamp be lit at the customary site with full protection, striking down previous restrictions and warning authorities of consequences if the directions were not followed.

The Deepam lighting, tied to Karthigai Deepam festivals, symbolizes Lord Murugan’s victory over darkness, rooted in 8th-century Pandya rock-cut architecture. Devotees annually ignite the pillar’s eternal flame for blessings, a practice predating modern eras, but restricted citing law-and-order fears around the Muslim shrine.

The Subramaniyaswamy Temple on Thiruparankundram hill is not only a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus but also neighbors a dargah revered by Muslims, making the location an emblem of delicate communal coexistence. Authorities cited concerns over law and order near the dargah as the reason for enforcing a ban on lighting the lamp at the traditional spot. This led to heightened tensions, with police detaining several BJP leaders, including Nainar Nagenthran, who had arrived at the site to participate in the customary ritual.

Despite the court’s clear instructions, the lamp lighting ceremony was shifted to an alternative site on the hill—a move reminiscent of practices followed during past decades, prior to a period when the traditional spot was contested. The authorities’ insistence on maintaining peace around the dargah underscored the fragile religious harmony in the region, where festivals and rituals have in the past resulted in friction and clashes.

The state government meanwhile moved swiftly to file a petition in the Supreme Court, essentially challenging the Madras High Court’s orders. The government emphasized that its priority remained maintaining communal harmony and public order in a region known for its mixed religious heritage. The petition asked the apex court to consider the broader context before enforcing the high court’s directive, underscoring the complexities involved in managing such a sensitive site.

As the Supreme Court gears up to hear the state’s petition, all eyes remain on Madurai, where the age-old coexistence between the Hindu temple and Muslim dargah continues to rely on a delicate, sometimes disputed, balance of respect and restraint.
