Microsoft Outage Disrupts Digital Systems at Nayara Refinery
"Cloud Dependency Exposed: Nayara Energy Faces Disruption Amid Microsoft Outage"

Microsoft Outage Disrupts Digital Systems at Nayara Energy’s Vadinar Refinery in Gujrat on 28th July 2025,Microsoft abruptly terminated services to Nayara Energy, a major Indian oil refinery , without prior notice. This action was taken under the European Union’s 18 th sanctions package against Russian – backed entities. Nayra has 49% stake from Russia’s Roseneft.
Within hour an Indian IT firm Rediff, provided alternate solutions by providing same services, that too at cheaper cost. Nayara Energy, which operates the 20 million tonnes-per-annum refinery at Vadinar and is backed by Russian oil major Rosneft, has in recent years moved aggressively toward digital transformation. The outage could now prompt a review of foreign cloud dependencies in critical infrastructure.

Indian Oil Giant Hits Back After Microsoft Cuts Services Due To EU Sanctions

Microsoft Outage…
Nayara Energy’s Vadinar oil refinery is one of the country’s largest and most strategic energy assets.
Nayara took an aggressive step and filed a petition in Delhi High Court, accusing Microsoft of violating Indian laws by enforcing EU sanctions in India. Disrupting critical IT services like Outlook and Microsoft Teams without warning. Ignoring consumer rights and compromising India’s energy sector operations.
Sources close to the company confirmed that the refinery experienced delays in accessing cloud-based applications and data exchange systems that are integral to real-time monitoring and logistics. The disruption occurred as a result of a widespread Microsoft 365 and Azure service blackout, which lasted several hours and affected various sectors including banking, retail, and energy.

🔴 Microsoft blocked Nayara Energy’s access even after full payment?
This isn’t a glitch. It’s a warning.
India’s backbone energy, railways, banking runs on foreign software. We’re one political decision away from a digital shutdown.

Microsoft Outage..
The incident exposed a growing vulnerability among Indian energy companies increasingly reliant on foreign tech providers. Nayara’s reliance on Microsoft’s cloud services for managing digital dashboards, SCADA integrations, and operational reporting led to a short-lived bottleneck in data-driven decision-making during the suspension.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has reportedly sought a report from Microsoft regarding the outage’s reach and impact in India. Meanwhile, cybersecurity experts warn that such single-point dependencies can have national implications if left unaddressed.

Microsoft Outage..
Nayara had called the action by Microsoft unilateral. “Nayara Energy has initiated legal proceedings against Microsoft following the abrupt and unilateral suspension of critical services. Microsoft is currently restricting Nayara Energy’s access to its own data, proprietary tools, and products – despite these being acquired under fully paid-up licences,” the company had said in a statement on July 28.
“This action has been taken unilaterally, without prior notice, consultation or recourse, and under the guise of compliance. Such moves signal a worrying trend of global corporations extending foreign legal frameworks into jurisdictions where they have no applicability,” it had said.
However, this incident reveals the vulnerability of India’s critical sectors like energy, banking, and defense, which are heavily reliant on western software platforms. But this also tells the world that there are a huge availablity of Indian based alternative, that too at cheaper rest.
