India is conducting mock security drills, planned across 244 civil defense districts, for the first time since 1971 India Pakistan war. This is aimed at effective civil defense in the event of hostile attacks. The drill is extended to village level. It will access the readiness and coordination of civil defense forces involving volunteers, home guards, officials, NCC, NSS, NYKS and students.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed all states to carry out #mockdrills on May 7 at pre determined locations, in the civil defense districts, for effective civil defense.

CIVIL DEFENCE MOCK DRILL :
A number of measures are expected to be taken such as :

Assess air raid warning systems in alerting people about aerial threats.
To train civilians to respond quickly and safely in case of an air strike
Testing hotline /radio links of civil authorities with IAF will be activated and tested.
Testing functionality of control rooms and shadow control rooms will be done.
It will also include hands -on training of civilians including students on civil defense aspects to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack such as firefighting, rescue, first aid , warden services and taking shelter during emergencies.
Another feature of the mock drill is to ensure total blackout and camouflage readiness in case of an air raid.
And, the provision for early camouflaging of vital plants or installations. Practice shielding critical infrastructures like airfields, refineries and railyards from aerial detection or attack.
Lastly evaluation of evacuation plans and its rehearsal will be conducted and accessed.
In Ferozepur, Punjab, lights were switched off in Cantontement zones as part of a blackout drill.

In case of aerial attacks, say experts in civil defense, upon hearing a siren, one must seek to take shelter at some safe place. If out in the open, try to lie down, if possible, in some pit like spot. If driving, abandon the vehicle at the roadside, let the keys of the vehicle be there and take shelter at some nearby safe place. Stay there, unless the siren of all is well is heard. The keys are to be placed near the vehicle, for in cases of emergency post the attack, the road clearing ought to be smooth operation.
The black out is mostly in the night time, to avoid being targeted during an aerial attack, say experts. The window panes are expected to be covered by thick curtains and also by black colored papers. If siren is heard while driving in the night, it is expected to switch off the vehicle’s light and take shelter at a nearby safe location.
