#PMJDY Celebrates 11 Years of Financial Inclusion

August 28, 2025, marks a historic milestone for India — the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) completes 11 years of transforming the country’s financial landscape. Launched in 2014 with the vision of “Banking the Unbanked,” PMJDY has become one of the world’s largest financial inclusion initiatives, empowering millions of families by bringing them into the formal banking system.

Back in 2014, crores of citizens had no access to a savings account, formal credit, or insurance. PMJDY addressed this gap by ensuring that every household had at least one bank account. With benefits such as zero-balance accounts, RuPay debit cards, access to insurance, pension schemes, and direct benefit transfers, the scheme made banking accessible to the common man.

Eleven years later, the numbers speak for themselves. Over 50 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened, with strong participation from women and rural households. Not only are these accounts active, but they have also become vehicles for government subsidies, financial literacy, and even small credit facilities, ensuring money reaches directly into the hands of beneficiaries without middlemen.

The success of PMJDY goes beyond just numbers. It has changed the way people view banking. Women in villages now manage their own accounts with confidence, farmers receive subsidies directly into their accounts, and workers in the unorganized sector can save and transact securely.
