S. Jaishankar hits back -“If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.”

"Nobody is forcing you to buy it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it." Reaffirms India's Stance .. "India’s National Interest is Non-Negotiable", Says Jaishankar at Economic Times Forum

S. Jaishankar hits back -“If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.” On August 23, 2025, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar defended India’s Russian oil imports at The Economic Times World Leaders Forum in Delhi. He criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods as hypocritical, arguing that accusations of war profiteering ignore similar trade by Europe and the U.S.

S. Jaishankar emphasized India’s focus on energy security and national interests, noting that China faces no such penalties despite larger imports, amid escalating geopolitical tensions. His remarks come amidst rising tensions with the US administration, which has recently imposed tariffs on Indian goods and threatened further sanctions over the Russian oil trade.

“If you have a problem buying oil or refined products from India, don’t buy it” : External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar takes a dig at US over President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on India.

A sharp retort to the US, which has been vocal in its opposition to India’s energy dealings with Russia. The minister pointed out the hypocrisy of the criticism, noting that major players like China and European nations remain the largest importers of Russian energy.

He stated that the argument against India’s purchases is a “presented” issue, deliberately ignoring the fact that India’s actions contribute to the stabilization of global oil prices, a fact that was acknowledged during the oil price surge of 2022

EAM Dr S Jaishankar says, “It’s funny to have people who work for a pro-business American administration accusing other people of doing business. If you have a problem buying oil or refined products from India, don’t buy it. Nobody forces you to buy it. Europe buys, America buys, so you don’t like it, don’t buy it.”

The External Affairs Minister emphasized that India’s decision-making process is independent and autonomous. He clarified that India’s purchases are driven by market conditions and are a crucial element of its energy security strategy.

Jaishankar highlighted that India’s trade with Russia has not seen a disproportionate surge compared to other nations and that India also buys oil from the United States, with those volumes having increased. He expressed “perplexity” at the logic behind the US scrutiny, which appears to single out India while overlooking other, larger importers.

Beyond the energy issue, Jaishankar also touched upon the broader trade relations with the US. He confirmed that trade negotiations are still ongoing, but India has “red lines” that it will not cross, primarily the protection of its farmers and small producers.

His remarks underscored a resolute stance that India will not compromise on its core national interests for the sake of a trade deal. The minister described President Donald Trump’s public style of foreign policy as a “departure from the traditional way of conducting business,” while maintaining that communication channels between the two countries remain functional despite disagreements.
