In a significant boost to Maharashtra’s coastal infrastructure, the much-anticipated Mumbai–Vijaydurg Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service will commence operations on March 1, 2026—just ahead of the Holi (Shimga) festival. Announced by the Maharashtra Ports Department, this service revives long-distance sea travel along the state’s western coastline after years of dormancy, building on the success of shorter routes like Mumbai–Alibaug.

The high-speed vessel M2M Princess, operated by M2M Ferries and described as one of the fastest passenger-cum-vehicle ferries in South Asia, will ply the route between Bhaucha Dhakka (Ferry Wharf) in Mumbai Port and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district.

Mumbai to Konkan in Just 7 Hours! 🚢

The sea journey will take approximately 5–7 hours, slashing travel time dramatically from the 10–14 hours typically required by road on the notoriously congested Mumbai–Goa highway. Travellers can drive their vehicles directly onto the ferry—cars, two-wheelers, or even bicycles—and enjoy a relaxed, scenic voyage along the Konkan coast.

Pilot Schedule and Fares

The service begins with a 16-day pilot phase in March featuring eight sailings each way. Departures from Mumbai are scheduled for March 1, 4, 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, and 25. Return sailings from Vijaydurg will occur on March 2, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19, 22, and 26. The inaugural trip departs Mumbai at 8 AM on March 1, arriving in Vijaydurg at 3 PM. The return leaves Vijaydurg at noon on March 2, reaching Mumbai by 7 PM.

Fares are passenger-friendly: Economy class starts at ₹2,500, while Premium Economy is ₹4,000. Vehicle charges include ₹600 for bicycles, ₹1,000 for two-wheelers, and ₹6,000 for four-wheelers. Bookings are open on the official M2M Ferries website.

Economic and Tourism Boost

This initiative, championed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane (also Sindhudurg Guardian Minister), addresses long-standing demands for better connectivity to the picturesque Konkan region. Vijaydurg, home to the historic sea fort—one of Maharashtra’s most impregnable coastal landmarks—will see a surge in tourism. The service promises stress-free travel, reduced road fatigue, lower highway congestion, and a greener alternative during peak festive and summer seasons.

During the pilot, the Mumbai Maritime Board will subsidise fuel costs. Post-March, the government will assess demand and financial viability before deciding on regular operations or expansion, potentially seeking viability gap funding. Over 140 regulatory clearances from central and state agencies ensured smooth readiness.

For Mumbaikars and Konkan natives, this marks a welcome shift from endless highway traffic to a breezy maritime experience. As Nitesh Rane noted, it offers “another travel choice to Konkan,” benefiting residents and tourists alike. With bookings now live, the ferry is set to sail into history as a milestone in Maharashtra’s maritime revival.
