India’s ambitious Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a multi-layered missile defense shield inspired by Lord Vishnu’s legendary weapon, has found a crucial partner in Russia. At its core lies the S-400 Triumf system, rebranded as the Sudarshan Chakra in Indian service, symbolizing both technological prowess and cultural continuity.

Acquired under a ₹35,000-crore deal signed in 2018, the S-400 is Russia’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile system. India has already inducted three squadrons, with two more expected by 2026. The system can track and neutralize hostile aircraft, drones, and missiles at ranges up to 400 km, offering a critical shield against threats from Pakistan and China.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra will entail building a multi-layered integrated air and missile defense shield, with an overlapping network of early-warning and tracking sensors, robust command and control posts, reliable land and sea-based batteries of advanced interceptor missiles and other weapons.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subhramanyam Jaishankar recently highlighted the importance of Russia’s role: “Our strategic partnership with Moscow is not confined to energy and defense trade. Russian officials, too, have reaffirmed their support. A spokesperson from Almaz-Antey, the manufacturer of the S-400, said: “India is not just a buyer, but a partner in securing stability in Asia. The Sudarshan Chakra is proof of our defense cooperation standing strong despite global pressures.”

Military analysts believe the S-400 has already made a difference. During heightened tensions in 2022 and 2023, its deployment reportedly deterred escalation across India’s western borders. A senior defense expert remarked: “The S-400, now called Sudarshan Chakra, gives India a decisive edge. It is a psychological and strategic shield that adversaries cannot ignore.”

While the Russian-built S-400 forms the middle layer of India’s air defense, the indigenous Project Kusha and Akash Prime systems are being developed to complement it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored this vision during his Independence Day address: “India’s Sudarshan Chakra will be an indigenous, multi-layered defense shield. With the support of trusted partners like Russia, we are building a system that will keep our skies secure.”

The Sudarshan Chakra project not only strengthens India’s defense but also reflects its strategy of blending foreign technology with domestic innovation.
