Trump’s tariff, arm-twisting theatrics; India stands firm!

Trump tariff is more noise than policy !! ...A pressure tactic??...

Trump’s tariff an arm-twisting theatrics : India stands firm and tall not playing to Trump’s not so melodious tune. India’s response reflects maturity—recognizing the difference between rhetoric and reality, and choosing policy over personality. Officials insist that India’s sovereignty on food security, defense procurement, and digital trade remains non-negotiable, regardless of tariff threat.

India refuses to compromise on farmer’s interest

After facing a 25% tariff rate from US, India maintains its stance on making any compromise on agricultural and dairy products as trade talks with the US resume on August 25. The government made it clear that farm goods, dairy, genetically modified food, beef and animal feed with meat are completely off the table.

“We are engaged with American officials and securing our national interest is our primary objective. The government is not going to come under pressure on areas that concern farmers and small businesses,” a government official said.

“India welcomes constructive dialogue and mutual respect in international partnerships. While we do not comment on political rhetoric during election seasons in other countries, the facts speak for themselves. India is one of the fastest-growing major economies and a trusted global trade partner.”  Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry spoke at a press event in New Delhi.

Goyal highlighted that India-U.S. trade relations have expanded significantly over the past decade, with bilateral trade crossing $200 billion in recent years. He reiterated that both nations have benefited from cooperation in sectors such as defense, technology, energy, and innovation. “The foundation of our trade relationship with the U.S. is built on shared democratic values and mutual respect-not on individual opinions,” he added.

“In this challenging environment, India, as the world’s third-largest energy consumer with 85% crude oil import dependence, strategically adapted its sourcing to secure affordable energy while fully adhering to international norms,” sources elaborated.

Previously, US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that India might stop purchasing Russian oil, describing it as “a good step” if verified, whilst India has maintained its sovereign authority to implement energy policies aligned with national interests.

PM Modi’s Silent Diplomacy: A Calm Response to Trump’s Theatrics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his strategic composure on the global stage, has not directly responded to Trump’s remarks, choosing instead to let India’s record and relationships speak for themselves. This silence is not inaction, but a calculated diplomatic posture.

Modi’s foreign policy approach has consistently emphasized continuity, strategic depth, and dignity, avoiding tit-for-tat commentary, especially when dealing with political leaders known for sensationalism. While Trump may be aiming to energize his domestic base, the Indian Prime Minister has stayed focused on realigning global partnerships and strengthening India’s long-term global position.

India’s top four exports to the US-pharmaceuticals, textiles, electricals and electronics, and jewellery form a critical part of American supply chains. India ranks among the top five import destinations for the US in pharma, textiles, and jewellery. In electronics, India is one of the fastest-growing exporters to the US.

“The total volume of ‘Made-in-India’ smartphones grew 240% year-on-year and now accounts for 44% of smartphones imported into the US, up from only 13% of smartphone shipments in Q2 2024,” according to a data. In the last quarter, India emerged as the dominant player in mobile handset shipments to the US.

Higher tariffs on key import destinations such as India could push up domestic prices for American consumers, especially in sectors where substitution is neither immediate nor cost-effective.

“While Trump’s trade policies unsettle global supply chains, India’s resilience and economic agility are emerging as key differentiators. Notably, regional competitors like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are still facing steeper tariffs, weakening their edge,”

“Amid global uncertainty, India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies, poised to lead the next phase of emerging market growth.” said Subhash Chandra Garg, former Finance and Economic Affairs Secretary.

Trump’s tariff ‘conceding quietly’-Brahma Chellaney

Still, the deeper concern lies not in tariffs themselves, but in what they represent. The Indian geostrategist Brahma Chellaney argues that this isn’t merely about trade, it’s about shaping the architecture of India’s future economic dependencies. “Conceding quietly,” he says, “can become a pattern.”

The underlying tensions go beyond tariffs. Chellaney warns that the United States is not just demanding better market access but is pushing India to rewrite domestic policy in ways that could have long-term consequences.

He noted that India would be expected to open its agricultural and dairy markets, even though industrial-scale American imports could shatter India’s family farms and undermine its food security.

The United States also expects India to ramp up purchases of American energy products by tens of billions of dollars annually. And despite already being a growing buyer of US arms, India would be nudged to increase its defense imports further. And, these expectations haven’t been officially acknowledged by Indian negotiators.

Trump’s trade tactics might grab headlines, but they could end up backfiring big time.

Trump’s approach will leave the United States  more economically and diplomatically isolated, while drawing other parts of the world together. Economists aren’t buying the hype either. Many say these import taxes will likely hike up prices for everyday consumers, hurt manufacturers, and drag down economic growth instead of boosting it.
