#S.Jaishankar Pushes for Stronger India–Russia Economic Ties. In a bid to recalibrate India–Russia economic ties, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has urged Russian companies to expand their presence and engagement in the Indian market, despite global trade headwinds and tariff challenges. His remarks come at a time when Russia is aggressively redirecting its trade partnerships toward Asia in response to Western sanctions, making India a natural partner of choice.
#S.Jaishankar stressed that while political relations between New Delhi and Moscow remain robust, trade and investment links have not yet reached their full potential. He highlighted India’s position as one of the fastest-growing large economies, offering opportunities across sectors ranging from energy and infrastructure to pharmaceuticals, information technology, and agriculture.
EAM Dr. S.Jaishankar: “Pleased to join First DPM Denis Manturov and attend the India-Russia Business Forum. Appreciate the assessments and reports of various sectoral leaders regarding the deeper potential of our economic ties. Reiterated that an enduring strategic partnership must have a strong and sustainable economic component. And in this context called on our businesses to do more trade, contemplate more investments & joint ventures and open new frontiers of economic cooperation.”

With tariffs and regulatory barriers still posing challenges, the minister acknowledged the need for smoother market access and proactive engagement by businesses on both sides. “It is not enough for governments alone to chart the course of cooperation,” Jaishankar emphasized. “Russian companies must establish a deeper footprint in India, adapting to our market dynamics and seizing the immense opportunities here.”
“Co-chaired an extremely productive 26th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation IRIGC-TEC along with First DPM Denis Manturov of Russia today.” stated Jaishankar.
The call comes against the backdrop of India’s rising energy imports from Russia, which have grown significantly since 2022. While hydrocarbons dominate the bilateral trade basket, New Delhi is keen to diversify the relationship to include manufacturing, digital technologies, and defense co-production.

For Russia, which faces tariff hurdles and barriers in many global markets, India represents a crucial consumer base and an emerging hub for production and exports. Engagement in Indian supply chains could allow Russian companies to mitigate risks and tap into the South Asian market more effectively.

Experts note that both nations must address structural issues—such as payment mechanisms, customs duties, and logistical bottlenecks—to achieve a more balanced and sustainable trade equation. Currently, trade is heavily tilted in Moscow’s favor due to oil and commodity imports.

Big Statement by S Jaishankar in Russia 🎯
“The economic crises of the last few years has taught us some lessons. First is the value of having dependable partners. Also, there is the vulnerability that comes with overdependence on a few parties” pic.twitter.com/gsiYZqelfy— Megh Updates 🚨™ (@MeghUpdates) August 20, 2025
Jaishankar’s message, therefore, is clear: the political trust between India and Russia should now translate into economic ambition. By engaging more extensively in India, Russian firms can not only offset the challenges of tariffs and sanctions but also help build a partnership that reflects the evolving realities of global trade.
