India’s cooperative sector has achieved a historic milestone with two of its most prominent institutions, Amul and IFFCO, securing the first and second positions globally in the World Cooperative Monitor rankings for 2025. This recognition highlights India’s increasingly vital role in driving community-centric economic models that balance market efficiency with social equity.
Dr. Verghese Kurien, famed as the “Father of India’s White Revolution,” transformed India from a milk-deficient country into the world’s largest milk producer through the innovative Anand cooperative model. By founding Amul, Kurien empowered millions of rural dairy farmers, eliminated middlemen, and ensured profits reached producers directly.
