Q. Box Cricket Tournament , When and How did the idea originate ?
mbyouthclub : “A few years back we stumbled upon the Khasdaar Krida Mahotsav, an annual sporting festival in our city, and saw it as an opportunity to raise funds for our upcoming projects with the Mahdi Bagh Philanthropic Foundation. We were a team of 6 women from the Mahdi Bagh Youth Club, and we decided to take a shot at the tournament, despite not knowing much about the game format. I’ll be honest, we were clunky and new to the rules, but we played with a carefree attitude and made it to the quarter finals! Even though we didn’t win, we felt like winners.
We stepped out of our comfort zone and gave it a shot, and that’s what mattered. As we looked around at the setup and arrangements, we thought, ‘Why not us? Why not our club?’ We had a Ranji player, Ms. Nadira Ebrahim, on our team, and she had connections. That’s how the idea sprouted, and we started making plans to organize a similar event with our club. It’s amazing how something unexpected can lead to something incredible!”

Q. About the main girls behind making the idea a hit
mbyouthclub: “Fatiza Yusuf, Tara Ali, Jamila Ali, Shaira Mehdi, Nadira Ebrahim, Farzin Malak.”
“We’ll never forget the energy and excitement we felt when we decided to organize the Box Cricket tournament at MahdiBagh! It was one thing playing the game, but organizing it was a whole different ball game. But we were determined to make it happen. When we shared the idea with the other members of our Mahdibagh youth club, we were thrilled to see the men folk pitching in to help and taking up the entire responsibilities.
And, oh boy, did we make it happen! Last year’s event was top-notch – the arrangements, the decorations, the lights… everything was perfect! We made sure the players felt like queens, and it was the most talked-about event in the city! This year, we’re taking it up a notch and organizing it even bigger and better. We are super excited and hoping for the best!”
Q. Experience about the Tournament editions so far ?
mbyouthclub : “Remembering the first Queen’s Cricket Challenge we hosted in Mahdibagh last year is a memory to cherish- it was a thrill to see our vision come to life! Two years in, and it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. We are so grateful to live in a place with such fantastic amenities and infrastructure, it makes events like these possible. Last year was a learning curve, but we took those lessons and ran with them.

We found amazing sponsors, planned meticulously, and executed with passion. And the best part? The profits went straight to supporting our community – our medical camp and mid-day meals for daily wage workers were taken care of, and it felt incredible to give back.
This year’s event has been in the works for 6 months now, and we are super excited to see it all come together. We’ve added so many cool things – our own mini Flea market, Heirloom Hunar with 13 talented artists, and Udaan exhibition showcasing local lifestyle brands. The energy is palpable, and we are loving every minute of it!”
The rules and format this season :
Q. The fun and frolic apart from the Cricket tournament ?
mbyouthclub:” The community’s Box Cricket event is a vibrant celebration that transcends the game itself, offering an immersive experience that captivates attendees from the Mahdi bagh community and our invited guests of all ages. The women’s teams display remarkable energy and passion on the pitch, drawing spectators in with the excitement of the game. Beyond the cricket, the event transforms into a lively festival, featuring flea markets, like Udaan and our homebrand, i.e Heirloom Hunar and children’s activities, like drawing competition, exciting play area and a palpable sense of community joy.
The atmosphere is going to be electric and all-encompassing, with music, announcements, and the aromas of local cuisine blending together to create an unforgettable ambiance. The event’s success is further underscored by its emphasis on safety and security, ensuring that all attendees can fully engage in the festivities without concern.
This multifaceted celebration has evolved into a highly anticipated occasion, appealing to a broad audience that extends beyond sports enthusiasts to encompass the entire community.”
Q. Why should more and more women come forward, form teams and join—
mbyouthclub : “Women’s experiences in box cricket tournaments are overwhelmingly positive, characterized by enthusiasm, camaraderie, empowerment, and healthy competition. These events are often organized to celebrate women’s participation in sports and provide a dedicated platform for them to play.
Box cricket, a compact and dynamic adaptation of traditional cricket, has gained popularity for its fast-paced gameplay and adaptability to limited spaces. Ideal for urban settings, indoor venues, and smaller outdoor areas, it offers a fun and engaging way to enjoy cricket without requiring a full-sized field. Setting up a box cricket pitch is simple when you follow these detailed steps, ensuring safety, manageability, and an enjoyable playing environment. Overall, the tournaments are a fun, healthy, and encouraging environment that allows women to enjoy the sport, stay fit, and build community.”
“Overall, it is very obvious that the game’s rules may be adjusted to accommodate the needs and preferences of both sides. This adaptable approach not only helps people become more physically active and interested in conventional cricket, but it also allows for a broad range of players of diverse ages and levels of fitness to compete together.” ended mbyouthclub with this note.
Goodluck to the Women Teams participating and Kudos to the MahdiBagh Community for their miraculous ventures !!
