Leopard Menace Managed : Vantara Relocation. The Maharashtra government has decided to relocate dozens of leopards from conflict-prone areas like Junnar and Shirur in Pune district to Vantara, Anant Ambani’s expansive 3,000-acre animal rescue and rehabilitation center Vantara in Gujarat’s Jamnagar, to curb rising man-animal conflicts.

Forest Minister Ganesh Naik announced an “urgent relocation drive,” targeting up to 50 leopards to Vantara and other states, with Central Zoo Authority approval secured by November 10, 2025. Plans include ₹10 crore for more cages, a Leopard Task Force, sterilization, and creating four containment forests in Pune; one man-eater was captured for immediate transfer. Despite assurances, villagers doubt full execution amid 1,200 local leopards.

Conflict Crisis in Pune
Junnar and Shirur report intense human-leopard clashes, with nearly 450 leopards in surrounding regions pushing into farmlands amid habitat loss and livestock availability. Recent incidents include a spate of fatal attacks, such as the killing of a 13-year-old boy in Pimparkhed in early November 2025, marking the fifth death since April and sparking villager protests. Over 53 people have been affected statewide in recent years.

Vantara, meaning “Star of the Forest,” operates as a global wildlife rescue facility with advanced hospitals, research labs, and care for over 2,000 animals across 43 species, including leopards. It has previously accepted leopards from Maharashtra’s Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre due to space shortages there, which holds only 44 big cats despite high conflict volumes.
