Andaman’s Gas Rush: India’s Energy Frontier Opens Up

Samudra Manthan Mission yields results, strengthening India’s path to energy self-reliance.

Andaman’s Gas Rush: India’s Energy Frontier Opens Up.The landscape of India’s energy sector witnessed a significant development this week as state-run Oil India Limited (OIL) announced a second successful natural gas discovery in the Andaman offshore region. This find, located at the Sri Vijayapuram-3 exploratory well, marks a major milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to transition toward a gas-based economy and reduce its heavy reliance on imported energy.

A Breakthrough in the Andaman Basin

The discovery was made approximately 15 kilometers off the east coast of the Andaman Islands at a water depth of 355 meters. Initial production testing, conducted at a depth of over 1,900 meters within the Eocene formation, confirmed the presence of natural gas through continuous flaring. Following perforation, the well exhibited a rapid pressure build-up, indicating the presence of a robust and functioning petroleum system.

This success is the second of its kind in the current exploration campaign, following the initial gas find at the Sri Vijayapuram-2 well in September 2025. With two positive results from three exploratory wells, industry experts are increasingly optimistic about the region’s potential. The Andaman Basin, which has historically been underexplored, is now emerging as one of India’s most promising energy frontiers, drawing geological comparisons to hydrocarbon-rich regions in neighboring Myanmar and Indonesia.

Aligning with the Samudra Manthan Mission

The discovery is a direct outcome of the Samudra Manthan Mission (National Deep Water Exploration Mission), an ambitious initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day 2025. The mission focuses on incentivizing deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration to fully map and exploit India’s offshore hydrocarbon reserves. By coordinating with global deepwater exploration experts, the government aims to accelerate the pace of data acquisition and appraisal drilling in these frontier basins.

The Path to Energy Security

India currently imports over 85% of its crude oil and a significant portion of its natural gas requirements, leaving the economy vulnerable to global price shocks. While the Sri Vijayapuram-3 discovery does not promise immediate commercial production, it provides critical geological data that validates the presence of hydrocarbons in the basin.

The road ahead involves extensive appraisal programs, including detailed reservoir studies, isotope analysis, and the acquisition of advanced 3D seismic data. These steps are essential to determine the commercial viability and the size of recoverable reserves.

If these efforts confirm substantial, extractable resources, the Andaman region could eventually serve as a cornerstone of India’s energy security, supporting the nation’s long-term goal of increasing the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030.

As India navigates the complexities of the global energy transition, the Andaman offshore block stands as a symbol of technological ambition and the pursuit of self-reliance.
