The Divine Alms: When Mahadev Seeks Food from Maa Annapoorna

Kashi's Golden Temple reminds the world that food is sacred, hunger is everyone's concern, and feeding others is the highest form of service.

A Divine Tradition That Makes Food, Compassion and Human Dignity the True Wealth of Society

Every year, on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, a remarkable tradition comes alive in the sacred city of Kashi. The golden form of Maa Annapoorna Devi, the Goddess of nourishment, opens for public darshan at the Annapurna Temple near Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

This rare darshan is traditionally available for a limited period during the Diwali festivities before the golden sanctum closes again.

But this is not merely an occasion to witness a magnificent golden idol. It is an opportunity to understand one of Hinduism’s most profound messages: No human being should ever go hungry.

When Mahadev Himself Becomes a Beggar

According to Hindu religious tradition, Lord Shiva once emphasised that the material world was Maya. Goddess Parvati, demonstrating the importance of nourishment, withdrew from the world, resulting in hunger and scarcity. Realising that food sustains life and cannot simply be dismissed as an illusion, Mahadev approached the Goddess in her Annapoorna form and sought alms.

In Kashi, Maa Annapoorna is worshipped as the provider of food and nourishment. The divine image of Mahadev receiving alms from the Goddess carries a powerful spiritual message: even the supreme divine acknowledges the importance of food.

The Goddess holds a golden vessel and a ladle, symbolising her eternal role as the provider who nourishes the universe.

Kashi’s Eternal Promise: Nobody Sleeps Hungry

Kashi is not just a city of temples, rituals and liberation. It is also a city where the relationship between spirituality and everyday human existence finds a beautiful expression.

The belief that nobody should sleep hungry in Kashi is deeply associated with Maa Annapoorna’s blessings. Her presence represents the assurance that food is a basic necessity, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy.

During the annual golden darshan, devotees also receive traditional Khazana Prasad, including coins and puffed rice (Dhaan ka Lawa), symbolising abundance and prosperity.

The Message Beyond Religion: Food Is Everyone’s Responsibility

The significance of Maa Annapoorna extends far beyond temple boundaries.

In a society where food wastage, hunger and unequal access to basic necessities remain concerns, her story offers a timeless lesson. True prosperity cannot be measured merely by gold, property, bank balances or material possessions. It must also be measured by how many people have access to a nourishing meal.

Annadanam, or the act of donating food, is therefore regarded as one of the most meaningful forms of service in Hindu tradition.

Whether through community kitchens, feeding the underprivileged, supporting food distribution initiatives or simply ensuring that surplus food reaches someone in need, every compassionate act reflects the spirit of Annapoorna.

The Greatest Wealth Is a Full Stomach

The golden Annapoorna Temple reminds devotees that wealth acquires meaning when it becomes a source of nourishment and happiness for others.

Mahadev receiving alms from Maa Annapoorna is not a depiction of weakness; it is a celebration of the dignity of food and the power of giving.

The ultimate message of Kashi is simple: Worship the Goddess with devotion, but honour her by ensuring that no one around us goes hungry.

Because the true blessing of Maa Annapoorna is not merely having food on our own plates, but having a society where everyone has enough to eat.
