DJ MAY CAUSE DEAFNESS OR EVEN DEATH!
WHEN DJ EFFECT DELIVERED DEAFNESS! REAL LIFE CASES WHEN HIGH DECIBELS CAUSED PERMANENT DAMAGE. ITS TIME, AUTHORITIES MUST REIGN IN ON 'THE HIGH DECIBEL' ENJOYMENTS.
DJ or Disk Jockey is a sort of mandatory custom in a celebration, these days. More and more people continue to lose the ability to hear due to high decibel noise levels, mostly due to the fashionable DJ systems. Loudspeakers, public address systems, DJ systems – all these sound sweet and good within permissible and enjoyable limits. Beyond that, they cause deafness and a host of other issues. The children, the aged ones, the womenfolk and the patients are the worst sufferers. While self regulation is best and can be achieved through awareness, implementation of provisions of law by vigilant authorities is the final solution.

A DJ system noise affected his life forever! Nitin Lilhare, a resident of Salai Khurd in Mohadi tahsil of Maharashtra’s Bhandara District is in a state of shock. He will probably never be able to hear normally again. Yes, he has lost his ability.
There was a marriage in the family. There was excitement in the air. Everyone, including him, looked happy and all set to enjoy the mood and the celebrations. Nitin’s cousin was the one getting married so, he and friends had plans to dance big time in the marriage procession.
The DJ was blaring in full and everyone looked keen on displaying his or her dancing skills. Nitin was no exception. He danced to the fullest that night and enjoyed every moment. He was sure everyone else had enjoyed, too.
THE DJ EFFECT CHANGED HIS LIFE
Once the marriage was solemnized and everyone went back home, did Nitin realize that he couldn’t hear anything. Yes! People around him were talking to each other and him. They were laughing and commenting. But, there was no word nor any sound. All that kept reverberating inside his mind was the big sound beats that were played on the DJ. He felt alarmed and shared this with others. His friends assured him through signs that everything will soon be ok.
His family members patted him, signaling that this could be a temporary effect of the DJ’s sound beats and soon he would regain normalcy. The elders thought he would be okay in a day or two.
Nothing improved in eight days. Then he was taken to the doctor. He was checked by medical experts and the reports that arrived were truly shattering. He had lost the ability to hear from one ear and the other ear still had only fifteen to twenty per cent ability to hear. Doctors said that the High level sound of the DJ system even goes above 140 dB and can cause permanent deafness.
Children and old people usually suffer long term effects due to the high decibel DJ noise. Pregnant women and the unborn also suffer long term effects.
Recently a mother wrote on her social media account, “There was a marriage in the family and I had come to my parents’ home with my kids. We were all happy, inside the house, waiting for the procession to start. Suddenly, loud beats were heard..”
She wrote further, “..It was the DJ playing and the thumping noise of the beats was so loud, we felt scared. One of my kids pointed to the window panes. The glass panes were shivering on the beats.”
“..Soon, other kids placed their tiny palms on the glass pane and began feeling the terrifying beats. The noise was soon unbearable for most of us inside, while some young men could be seen enjoying the blaring loud outside and making dance moves. I asked all the kids to put their palms on their ears and asked a maid to bring cotton plugs. I couldn’t believe that I had come with my small kids for this. By no stretch of imagination, could it be termed enjoying a celebration !”
CHICKEN DIED
Recently, a poultry owner in Odisha’s Balasore filed a police complaint after the death of 63 chicken. He claimed that it was due to the high sound level music played by the DJ system passing nearby. The doctors also opined, that high decibel noise can not only make you lose your hearing ability but also you may keep hearing a ringing sound for too long. ‘Too loud-too long’ may cause heart attacks among humans and even birds.
LOUD AND UNCOMFORTABLE DJ
For humans, normally the decibel levels of common sounds above 80 dB are considered ‘loud’. The ‘uncomfortable’ decibel levels for common sounds are considered between 100 and 125 dB. ENT specialists say that loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to human ears. Regular or long exposure to loud noise (Too loud-too long) can result in irritability, nervousness and experiencing difficulty in making decisions.
Local authorities including the law enforcing agencies should take planned efforts to control and regulate noise levels from going to be loud or uncomfortable levels as it causes misery to the population and such effects usually go unrecorded.
THE NOISE LEVELS AND THE LAW
In India, the noise pollution and its source are addressed under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has laid down the permissible noise levels in decibels during day time and during night time for different categories of areas in India. In residential areas the acceptable limit in day time is 55dB and 45dB in night time. For industrial areas however, it is 75 dB and 70 dB respectively while in commercial areas, it is 65 dB and 55 dB respectively.
In addition to these, the state governments have marked ‘silent zones’ in different places that also include areas within a hundred meter distance from educational institutions such as schools and colleges apart from hospitals and courts. The permissible noise levels are 50 dB during the day and 40 dB during the night time.
India currently has a prevalent system of fines to the tune of rupees ten thousand to rupees one lac besides seizure of the equipment etc. But, as they say, every good rule goes bad with bad implementation.
