A River Divided, A Faith United
Legend speaks of a time long before the current architectural grandeur of the Jagannath and Gundicha temples. It is said that an ancient river, the Malini, flowed across what is now the Bada Danda, physically separating the two sacred sites.

In those early times, the Rath Yatra faced immense logistical challenges; the chariots could not travel directly, necessitating complex maneuvers involving boats and secondary chariots to transport the deities across the water.
The transformation of this landscape is attributed to a chapter of 13th-century history involving Queen Saradha Devi. Recognizing the hurdles faced by the devotees, she took the initiative to fill the riverbed with sand, effectively merging the banks and creating a direct, unbroken path of connection.
This act of devotion and foresight transformed the passage between the temples into a seamless route, forever silencing the division that once hindered the Lord’s journey. The site was fittingly named “Saradha Bali”—a blend of the Queen’s name and “Bali,” the Odia word for sand.

Today, Saradha Bali stands in front of the Gundicha Temple, serving as the resting place for the chariots during the annual sojourn. For millions of pilgrims, the dust of these sands is profoundly auspicious.
Devotees often touch the sands of Saradha Bali to their foreheads, seeking the blessings of Lord Jagannath and internalizing the sanctity of the ground that once bridged a river and now unites hearts.
