IMAX Is Back, Hyderabad—and Varanasi Is Coming. For movie lovers in Hyderabad, a long-awaited comeback is finally happening. IMAX has announced a partnership with Asian Cinemas and AMB Cinemas to launch three new IMAX screens in India, with two of them set to open in Hyderabad. Hyderabad has long been considered the heart of Telugu cinema, producing some of India’s biggest blockbusters and nurturing a passionate movie culture. The return of IMAX strengthens the city’s reputation as one of the country’s premier entertainment destinations.
Perfect Timing for Rajamouli’s Next Epic
The announcement comes at an ideal moment as anticipation builds for Varanasi, the upcoming action-adventure spectacle from acclaimed filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli. Scheduled for release on April 7, 2027, the film stars Mahesh Babu in dual roles alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
3 new IMAX locations will open in India through the AMB Cinemas brand.

Industry reports suggest the film is being shot using IMAX-certified cameras, making the format the preferred way to experience Rajamouli’s ambitious vision on the big screen. Fans are already viewing the reopening of IMAX screens as the perfect setup for one of the most anticipated Indian films in recent years.
Fans Celebrate the Return
The revival has generated excitement across the Telugu film community. AMB Cinemas itself is backed by Mahesh Babu, while prominent industry figures such as Venkatesh Daggubati and Rana Daggubati have also championed premium cinema experiences in the city.
With state-of-the-art technology returning and blockbuster releases on the horizon, Hyderabad is once again poised to become one of India’s most sought-after destinations for movie lovers.
