Two new laser-powered IMAX screens arrive just as anticipation peaks for Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s biggest cinematic adventure yet.

IMAX Is Back, Hyderabad—and Varanasi Is Coming. For movie lovers in Hyderabad, a long-awaited comeback is finally happening. IMAX has announced a partnership with Asian Cinemas and AMB Cinemas to launch three new IMAX screens in India, with two of them set to open in Hyderabad. The move marks the return of the premium large-format experience to the city more than a decade after the closure of the iconic Prasads IMAX in 2015.

A New Era of Premium Cinema

The first of the new screens is expected to open at AMB Classic Victory in RTC X Roads by late 2026. The theatres will feature IMAX’s cutting-edge laser projection technology, delivering crystal-clear 4K visuals, brighter images, deeper contrast, and immersive multi-dimensional sound. The upgrade promises a significantly enhanced movie-going experience for audiences seeking the highest level of cinematic presentation.

Hyderabad has long been considered the heart of Telugu cinema, producing some of India’s biggest blockbusters and nurturing a passionate movie culture. The return of IMAX strengthens the city’s reputation as one of the country’s premier entertainment destinations.

Perfect Timing for Rajamouli’s Next Epic

The announcement comes at an ideal moment as anticipation builds for Varanasi, the upcoming action-adventure spectacle from acclaimed filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli. Scheduled for release on April 7, 2027, the film stars Mahesh Babu in dual roles alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Industry reports suggest the film is being shot using IMAX-certified cameras, making the format the preferred way to experience Rajamouli’s ambitious vision on the big screen. Fans are already viewing the reopening of IMAX screens as the perfect setup for one of the most anticipated Indian films in recent years.

Fans Celebrate the Return

The revival has generated excitement across the Telugu film community. AMB Cinemas itself is backed by Mahesh Babu, while prominent industry figures such as Venkatesh Daggubati and Rana Daggubati have also championed premium cinema experiences in the city.

With state-of-the-art technology returning and blockbuster releases on the horizon, Hyderabad is once again poised to become one of India’s most sought-after destinations for movie lovers.
