Vada Pav Out, Vigilance In: Safety Over Sales

The FDA chief’s enforcement drive puts hygiene, compliance and children’s food choices under the spotlight.

Vada Pav Out, Vigilance In: Safety Over Sales crackdown @school canteens  Mahainrshtra. Tukaram Mundhe’s latest food-safety drive is making its impact felt far beyond restaurant kitchens. As Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner, Mundhe has pushed enforcement from commercial establishments into an area that directly affects children: school food. His message is increasingly clear—food safety rules are not optional.

Vada Pav Out, Healthier Choices In

Across Mumbai, several school canteens have rewritten their menus. Vada pav, samosas and other fried items are being replaced with idli, dosa, poha, sheera and upma, while some schools have replaced aerated drinks with buttermilk. Packaged sugary foods are also being reduced, with fresh fruit emerging as an alternative.

The 50-Metre Rule

The crackdown goes beyond the school canteen counter. Schools have been instructed to ensure that foods high in fat, sugar and salt are not sold within 50 metres of school premises. Schools can report non-compliant food businesses to the FDA, while rural institutions can approach local bodies when necessary. The Bombay High Court has also upheld the FDA’s curb on HFSS food sales around school gates.

A Wider Crackdown

The school initiative is only one part of Mundhe’s broader enforcement streak. Under his leadership, the FDA has intensified inspections of restaurants, food businesses and quick-commerce warehouses. Reuters reported that inspections covered 86 establishments, with 60 improvement notices issued and permits suspended at 12 warehouses over hygiene concerns.

Rules That Reach the Plate

What makes the “Mundhe effect” notable is that enforcement is translating into visible everyday changes—from what children buy during recess to what families are advised to consume. His approach has been built around a straightforward principle: “safe food, safe medicine, safe Maharashtra.”

The real test, however, is consistency. A crackdown matters only if inspections continue, violations are addressed fairly, and healthier choices remain accessible. If that balance is maintained, Mundhe’s streak could become more than a series of headlines—it could help make food safety a routine part of Maharashtra’s public culture.
