Don’t Click That Link : Exposing Fake Delivery SMS Scams. Fraudulent messages and phishing scams have become increasingly common across India, with criminals exploiting SMS, email, and social media platforms to deceive unsuspecting citizens. One such recent example is an SMS claiming that a package has arrived at the warehouse and urging the recipient to update their address within 24 hours to avoid the package being returned.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check division has confirmed that this message is fake and warned that India Post never sends such alerts requesting address updates via links.

Such messages are part of widespread phishing attempts where scammers trick people into clicking on malicious links. Once clicked, these links may steal personal details, including bank account information, Aadhaar number, or passwords, or even install malware on the user’s device. These scams often use urgent language — “Update now,” “Avoid return,” “Account blocked” — to create panic and prompt hasty action without verification.

Similar fraudulent messages seen recently include fake courier delivery notifications from private logistics, fake Courier companies, bogus electricity bill payment warnings, and false government subsidy or refund offers. On social media, fake recruitment ads and investment schemes promising quick returns are also rampant. Many impersonate official institutions like banks, post offices, or even ministries to gain credibility.
“Don’t Click That Link” : Beware of fake delivery SMS and phishing scams targeting Indian citizens.
Authorities consistently advise the public to verify any suspicious communication through official channels before responding. For instance, India Post urges users to check delivery status only via its official website or customer service helpline. Citizens should never click on links in unsolicited emails or SMS, and should avoid sharing sensitive information unless they have confirmed the source’s authenticity.
