Hayli Gubbi Erupts: A 12,000 Year Sleep Shattered in Seconds

Ash Chokes Flight Paths Across Asia as Afar Locals Face Lingering Risks

Hayli Gubbi Erupts: A 12,000 Year Sleep Shattered in Seconds. A dormant giant in Ethiopia’s Afar region awakened this week, as the Hayli Gubbi shield volcano erupted for the first time in more than 12,000 years. The unexpected eruption sent a towering ash plume nearly 14 kilometers into the atmosphere, spreading volcanic debris across nearby communities and triggering widespread concerns for both local residents and international aviation routes.

Back in Afar, Ethiopian authorities and regional volcanologists monitored lingering sulfur dioxide levels and residual activity at the eruption site. Early assessments indicate that the most intense phase of the eruption has passed, though experts caution that volcanic systems can remain unpredictable in the days following an initial event. Emergency teams are distributing masks and providing information on safe water use to communities affected by ash fall.

Ash fall was heaviest around Afdera village, where residents reported darkened skies and fine volcanic dust settling over homes, grazing areas, and salt-mining sites. Although authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have occurred, herders in the region expressed deep worry that grazing lands may be damaged for months. Livestock—central to the Afar pastoral economy—are particularly vulnerable to ash-contaminated vegetation and water sources.

High-altitude winds propelled the plume northeastward across the Red Sea, extending its reach far beyond Ethiopia’s borders. Satellite observations showed ash and sulfur dioxide drifting over Yemen, Oman, Pakistan, and into northern India. The wide dispersion prompted aviation authorities in multiple countries to issue advisories, as volcanic ash can severely damage jet engines.

India experienced some of the earliest and most direct aviation impacts. Air India canceled 11 flights, while several other carriers opted to delay, reroute, or adjust cruising altitudes to avoid ash-laden air corridors. Though disruptions were significant, industry officials noted that rapid forecasting and coordination helped minimize risk. As the eruption subsided, flight schedules gradually began to normalize.

For Afar’s residents, the eruption has been both alarming and awe-inspiring—a rare geological event reshaping landscapes and routines. While immediate dangers appear to be easing, the long-term environmental impact on pasturelands and livelihoods remains uncertain. As monitoring continues, both local communities and international observers are watching closely to understand what comes next for Hayli Gubbi’s unexpected return to activity.
