Loyal. Lethal. Legendary. RVC’s Republic Day Parade Debut. The 2026 Republic Day Parade will mark a unique and historic milestone as, for the first time, the Indian Army’s Animal and Birds Contingent marches down Kartavya Path. Representing this living legacy is the Indian Army’s Remount & Veterinary Corps (RVC), a branch that quietly but decisively supports military operations through the care, training, and management of animals that serve alongside soldiers.
The inclusion of the RVC’s animal and birds contingent in the 2026 Republic Day Parade is more than a ceremonial first. It is a long-overdue recognition of a silent service that blends tradition, science, compassion, and combat support. As the contingent marches past the nation, it will remind India that national defense is not only about weapons and machines, but also about the loyal animals and dedicated professionals who have served, often unnoticed, for decades.
The Remount & Veterinary Corps is among the oldest arms of the Indian Army, with roots dating back to the pre-Independence era. Its primary responsibility lies in breeding, rearing, training, and maintaining animals such as horses, mules, and military dogs that are indispensable to the Army. In difficult terrains like high-altitude Himalayan regions, dense forests, and remote border areas where vehicles cannot reach, these animals form the backbone of logistics and transport. From carrying supplies to evacuating casualties, their role remains operationally critical even in the age of modern warfare.
Equally vital is the RVC’s veterinary function. Corps officers ensure the health, fitness, and operational readiness of all animals through advanced veterinary care, disease prevention, and rehabilitation. Their expertise extends beyond routine care to research in zoonotic diseases—illnesses that can spread from animals to humans—thereby contributing to both military and national biosecurity. This scientific role has grown increasingly important in a world facing emerging health threats.

The RVC also plays a key role in counter-terrorism and internal security operations through the training and deployment of highly skilled military dogs. These canine soldiers are trained for tasks such as explosive detection, tracking, search and rescue, and patrol duties, often operating in high-risk environments alongside infantry units.

Organizationally, the Remount & Veterinary Corps is distinctive in that its officers are commissioned under the Short Service Commission system, bringing in highly qualified veterinary professionals from across the country. In recent years, the Corps has also inducted women officers, reflecting the Indian Army’s broader push towards inclusivity and modernization while retaining its traditional strengths.
