As the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 kicks off in Davos, Switzerland, Indian leaders like Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are under fire for jetting off to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with domestic businesses. Critics question: Why travel thousands of miles on public funds when these deals could happen in Mumbai or Delhi? The event, themed “A Spirit of Dialogue,” draws billionaires and policymakers to tackle global issues like climate change—yet it’s marred by accusations of hypocrisy, especially with soaring private jet usage.

On one side, proponents argue Davos offers unparalleled value. It’s a hub for over 3,000 leaders, including 65 heads of state, where Indian delegations network with global investors. Fadnavis, for instance, inaugurated the Maharashtra Pavilion to pitch the state as a $1 trillion economy by 2030, securing MoUs worth ₹14.5 lakh crore on day one, spanning tech, renewables, and manufacturing.

Even deals with Indian firms like Lodha Developers (₹1 lakh crore for data centers) occur amid international buzz, potentially unlocking foreign partnerships and boosting credibility. Last year, Maharashtra converted similar MoUs into real investments, creating jobs and growth. Supporters say the “snow and weather” symbolize prestige, attracting FDI that eludes domestic events.

Fadnavis’ meeting with Maharashtra industrialists, including a cabinet colleague’s firm, fuels cries of “domestic deals abroad.”

Why waste taxpayer money when virtual or local signings suffice? The climate irony amplifies this: Private jets to Davos rose 10% this year, with one flight per four attendees, emitting more CO2 than thousands of cars annually. Billionaires preaching car-sharing for the masses while flying private epitomizes “elite hypocrisy,” as Greenpeace notes.
