Made in India to ‘Made by India’ Smartphone Brand

Ashwini Vaishnaw’s smartphone vision signals a bigger ambition: an Indian brand built for the world.

Made in India to ‘Made by India’ Smartphone Brand. For years, India has been one of the world’s largest smartphone markets, but the biggest brands on Indian shelves have largely been foreign-owned. That equation could be set for a major change.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said India could see its first strong indigenous mobile phone brand by mid-2027, signalling a shift from simply “Make in India” to building phones that are genuinely owned, designed and developed in India.

Made In India

From Assembly Hub to Brand Powerhouse

India has already made remarkable progress in mobile manufacturing. According to the government, 99.2% of mobile phones used in India are now made in India, while the country has become the world’s second-largest mobile-phone manufacturer by volume. But manufacturing a foreign brand and creating an Indian brand are two different achievements.

The new challenge is to build Indian intellectual property, product design, technology and brands capable of competing globally.

₹62,500 Crore Push

The government has notified the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with a massive ₹62,500-crore outlay. Running from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31, the scheme has a dedicated segment for Indian mobile brands, offering incentives for Indian-owned brands and additional support for design and research conducted in India.

The government expects the scheme to generate around 60,000 direct jobs and drive cumulative mobile-phone production of approximately ₹39 lakh crore during its tenure.

What Makes a Phone Truly Indian?

The real test will not be the words “Made in India” printed on a box. The government says an eligible Indian brand must meet conditions involving Indian ownership, management control, intellectual property, trademarks and in-house research and design capabilities.

That distinction matters. India wants to move higher up the technology ladder—from assembling devices to owning the ideas behind them.

A New Digital Identity?

If the plan succeeds, an Indian smartphone could become more than another gadget. It could represent domestic engineering, Indian software, local intellectual property and a stronger electronics ecosystem.

Vaishnaw’s promise therefore carries a larger message: India does not merely want to manufacture the world’s phones—it wants to build phones the world may eventually want to buy. The next 10–14 months could reveal whether that ambition becomes a genuine Indian technology brand.
