The strikes at Nur Khan and Sargoda airbase sparked a chatter that the IAF might well have made an indicative strike at Kirana Hills to tell Pakistan that not only that the forces know everything, they also have the capability to strike anywhere in Pakistan. However, Air Marshal AK Bharti junked all chatter about any Indian hit at Kirana Hills. His smile when he said, “Thank you for telling us that Kirana Hills houses some nuclear installations. We did not know about it,” was noticeable. The smile was infectious for Indians.
As part of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force conducted precision night raids on nine terror hideouts across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes targeted key infrastructure belonging to banned terror outfits including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
In a pre-dawn operation on May 10, the Indian Air Force (IAF) struck 11 military sites deep inside Pakistan using air-launched precision weapons in a follow-up to Pakistan’s attempt to target Indian airbases. India’s precision missile strikes on 10 key Pakistani airbases, included the strategically vital Nur Khan base near the Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawa.

The strike on Nur Khan airbase in Chaklala, near Rawalpindi, carried significant strategic weight. The base is home to Pakistan’s main transport squadrons and vital for logistical and strategic airlift operations, housing aircraft like C-130 Hercules and IL-78 mid-air refuelers. More critically, Nur Khan lies in close proximity to the headquarters of the Strategic Plans Division, the body overseeing Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.
The New York Times quoted a former US official familiar with Pakistan’s nuclear programme, noting, “Pakistan’s deepest fear is of its nuclear command authority being decapitated. The missile strike on Nur Khan could have been interpreted… as a warning that India could do just that.”
Satellite imagery also indicated a strike on the runway of Mushaf airbase in Sargodha. This base is reportedly linked to underground nuclear storage sites beneath the Kirana Hills and was struck with multiple loitering penetrating munitions.

Sargoda air base hit
Pakistan has tried to leverage its nuclear status against India. While India follows a no-first-use policy when it comes to nuclear weapons, Pakistan doesn’t have any such stated policy of restraint. A look at online map of the Kirana Hills area reveals a bed of construction amid the brown and green of the hills. At Khushab, 200 km south of Islamabad, there are four heavy water reactors dedicated to production of weapons-grade plutonium,” according to a report in World Nuclear Association that was updated in February 2025.
#Kirana Hills is a highly fortified military zone known for its underground nuclear infrastructure, Colonel Vinayak Bhat (Retd), wrote for The Print in November 2017. Covering an area of nearly 68 sq km and encircled by a 39-km perimeter, the Kirana Hills facility is designed with a multi-layered defence system.
In addition to Nur Khan, other bases hit included Rafiqui in Shorkot (Jhang district), Murid in Chakwal, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian in Kasur. Airbases in Skardu, Bholari, Jacobabad, and Sargodha also suffered extensive damage. Notably, the Mushaf airbase in Sargodha is said to be linked to the Kirana Hills.
