Shah explained that the SIR exercise was vital for preserving the integrity of the electoral rolls and ensuring that only eligible voters participate in the democratic process. He highlighted that the special drive was conducted with utmost transparency and fairness, countering claims that it was politically motivated. The Home Minister stressed that maintaining accurate voter lists strengthens democracy and guards against potential electoral fraud.

However, the opposition, led by Congress, raised serious concerns regarding the Election Commission’s recent decisions, including the 2023 removal of the Chief Justice from the panel responsible for selecting EC members. Rahul Gandhi questioned procedural changes such as the deletion of CCTV footage after 45 days and the legal immunity granted to election commissioners, calling these moves signs of institutional capture that undermine the commission’s independence.

The confrontation intensified as Shah responded by accusing Congress of previous efforts to manipulate electoral processes. He asserted the government’s commitment to upholding democratic norms and ultimately controlled the order of his speech, which Parliament sources indicated led to protests on the floor.

The debate underscored deep divisions between the ruling party and opposition on election integrity and institutional transparency.
