An ordinary hot cuppa tea is refreshing and welcome anytime. But, is it healthy? Well, not exactly. But here’s a tea, in a range of flavours, that is tasty and healthy, too.

It comes from Moringa tree. Moringa is known commonly as ‘Sahajan’ in Hindi and ‘Munaga’ in Marathi. (Scientific term : Moringa oleifera. It is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree of the family Moringaceae and is native to the Indian subcontinent.)

And in many countries, Moringa is regarded highly as a ‘superfood’. The Moringa leaves and beans have been known sources of nutrition since time immemorial.

Shweta Sharma, chief growth officer of the agri business start-up ‘Leaf Era’ claims, that Diabetes was found to have been reversed in some cases, due to the use of Moringa.

The start-up has introduced ‘Moringa tea’ as it is suited for consumption, most amazingly, in tea form. She says the leaf extract carries all the nineteen nutrients and the wellness of Moringa. She cites an example of a client from Gujrat. He had to get 100ml insulin daily. She claims that the regular intake of Moringa tea plus powder has reduced his dependency on insulin injections and he is back to tablets.

Moreover, the use of Moringa leaves in the production of tea  has raised the leaves as a high value product. Ultimately the farmers are benefited when the per kilo price of leaves climb up from rupees two fifty to five thousand.  She also thanks the Pusa agricultural incubation center (https://pusakrishi.in/)  at Indian Agricultural Research Centre (ICAR-IARI) for supporting them in sectors like focused growth and marketing.

Is it tasty?

‘Yes,’ says Shweta Sharma adding, ‘Our product offers a win win situation for all, as it is immensely beneficial for the health of the consumers and it fetches good value for the agriculturists.’

The story behind ‘Leaf Era’

The story begins with two Agri Business Management graduates from Sri Sri University, Odisha who had their capstone project on Moringa as an effective nutritional supplement. They are Kameshwar Kota , an experienced founder with 4 years of IT experience plus engineering background and Jil Bhimani , a young graduate from industrial chemistry background.  In addition to the technical study, they also had done product development too.

Together, they curated different flavours of Moringa leaf based teas and formed a private limited company, ‘LeafEra Agro Foods private limited’, based out of Rajkot, Gujarat. They also brought in another key person into the core team, Shweta Sharma as Chief Growth officer and face of the company. She operates from New Delhi.

When asked about the initial response, Kameshwar Kota says, ‘Initially, we had tremendous response in our pilot testing and in close circles. Later we applied for Incubation under different agencies under ICAR. We were selected as top 20 startups in the agricultural sector by PUSA and were awarded 15lakhs grant under RKVY RAFTAAR Scheme. We are proud to be the pioneers of Moringa based herbal tea products with such growing flavour options.’
