Aging aircraft & outdated systems

However, aviation experts point to a deeper issue, the increasing reliance on aging aircraft and outdated systems within some fleets. Several Indian carriers operate aircraft that have been in service for many years. While routine maintenance is conducted, older equipment remains more susceptible to unexpected technical failures.

The incident has prompted calls for Indian carriers to invest in modernizing their fleets and updating maintenance protocols. Aviation safety analysts stress the need for stricter checks, real-time data monitoring, and more proactive reporting of technical issues.

Aviation sector rapidly expanding

“India, now recognized as one of the most dynamic aviation markets in the world, must ensure that growth is matched by safety and infrastructure improvements.”

India’s aviation sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, with millions of passengers flying domestically and internationally. But this growth must be matched with improved safety measures. Regulatory bodies like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are now expected to take a closer look at fleet management and incident response preparedness.

Though no passengers were harmed, the engine failure on the IndiGo flight is a reminder that aviation safety cannot be taken lightly. It highlights the urgent need for Indian airlines to reassess the condition of their fleets and enhance technical readiness.

India’s Aviation growth

Domestic air traffic growth : In 2024, India’s airlines carried 161.3 million domestic passengers, marking a 6.12% increase year‑on‑year (from 152.0 million in 2023)

Monthly domestic growth : Passenger traffic grew by 11.04% in February 2025 compared to February 2024. For April 2025, growth stood at 10.2% year-on-year.

Global position : India is currently the world’s 3rd‑largest domestic aviation market, and one of the fastest‑growing aviation markets globally

Capacity and fleet expansion : In FY2025 alone, Indian airlines added 96 aircraft, with capacity expansion expected to outpace passenger demand in the near term

“India’s domestic air travel grew by over 10% year‑on‑year in early 2025, and the country remains the third‑largest air market globally, with passenger traffic expected to reach 175–181 million by FY2026. Analysts forecast 7–10% annual growth in domestic travel and a broader market CAGR of around 12% through 2033.”

Indian Aviation safety : Remedial measures

  1. Fleet Modernization-Replace or phase out older aircraft with newer, fuel-efficient, and technologically advanced models. And, invest in aircraft with real-time engine and system monitoring capabilities

2. Enhanced maintenance protocols- Increase the frequency of checks on older aircraft and engines, use predictive maintenance powered by AI and data analytics to detect early signs of failure. And, improve record-keeping and traceability of parts and service history.

3. Stricter regulatory oversight-The DGCA should conduct more surprise audits and technical inspections, enforce stricter compliance for airlines operating older fleets and penalize lapses in maintenance reporting or non-compliance.
