The Boy Who Skipped IIT Placements to Chase the Sky

The Startup Gamble That Could Change India’s Aerospace Future

The Boy Who Skipped IIT Placements to Chase the Sky. Walking Away From the “Safe” Dream. For most students at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, placement season is the final reward after years of relentless hard work. High-paying jobs, global companies and financial security often define success on campus. But for Shreepoorna Rao, success meant something entirely different.

The Boy

He skipped placements for two consecutive days. On the third day, overwhelmed by pressure to attend interviews, he reportedly boarded a flight back to Mangalore just to escape being forced into the conventional corporate path. At only 23,in 2025 he had already chosen uncertainty over stability because his obsession with building aircraft had become stronger than fear itself.

To many around him, the decision looked irrational. But behind every unconventional dream lies a moment where logic gives way to conviction. At just 23, he gained national attention after raising $2.6 million in pre-seed funding in 2025

Building a Startup With Barely ₹20,000

After returning, Shreepoorna moved to Bengaluru and began building Arctus Aerospace, a company developing high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles capable of flying up to 45,000 feet.

The early days were brutal.

With barely ₹20,000 in hand, he still hired an intern and promised a ₹7,000 stipend, betting on vision before resources. There were days when survival itself became difficult. On one occasion, unable to return to his PG accommodation on time, he spent the night at Bengaluru’s Majestic bus stand.

There were no glamorous startup offices, no media headlines and no guarantee of success — just a young engineer carrying an ambition far bigger than his circumstances.

His struggle reflects a reality rarely shown in startup culture: before innovation comes sacrifice, isolation and relentless uncertainty.

Reimagining Earth Observation

Today, Arctus Aerospace is working on unmanned aircraft capable of flying continuously for nearly 24 hours while capturing centimetre-level imagery from the stratosphere. The technology aims to provide earth-observation data at nearly 95% lower cost than traditional satellite systems.

Shreepoorna believes satellites are no longer the smartest solution for many modern applications. Industries like defence, oil and gas, agriculture and insurance increasingly need faster, cheaper and more flexible aerial intelligence systems.

What makes the story even more extraordinary is the global confidence the startup has already attracted. At just 23, he raised a $2.6 million pre-seed round backed by investors including Balaji Srinivasan, Version One Ventures and South Park Commons.

The Rise of India’s Fearless Youth

Shreepoorna Rao’s journey is bigger than one startup. It represents a generational shift in India’s youth mindset. Young founders are no longer satisfied with secure careers or copying existing ideas. They want to build frontier technologies from India that can compete globally.

His story is ultimately about risk — the courage to disappoint expectations, survive failure and continue building even when success seems impossibly distant.

Sometimes the boldest flight begins long before the aircraft ever leaves the ground.
