Women’s Voice : India’s Austerity Test

Economic Sacrifice or Domestic Strain?

Women’s Voice : India’s Austerity Test. The Prime Minister’s recent appeal for economic restraint has triggered a profound wave of discussion among women across India. As the traditional “CFOs” of Indian households, women find themselves at the center of these proposed shifts, particularly regarding gold and edible oil.

Homemakers Plight

Homemakers have expressed concern over the 10% reduction in edible oil, noting that kitchen budgets are already tight.

However, many are pivoting toward healthier, air-fried, or steamed alternatives as a patriotic contribution.

Participation in Nation Building

Across India, numerous working professionals have embraced the Prime Minister’s Austerity Plan with enthusiasm, viewing it as a meaningful avenue to participate in nation-building.

Many employees have particularly welcomed the shift back to remote work and virtual meetings, noting that it fosters a better work-life balance while simultaneously reducing the country’s fuel burden.

Economic Satyagraha

This collective response reflects a spirit of “economic satyagraha,” where the workforce aligns personal lifestyle changes—such as adopting carpooling and reducing non-essential travel—with the broader goal of stabilizing the national economy and preserving foreign exchange.

For these professionals, the plan is not merely a set of restrictions but a proactive opportunity to contribute to India’s long-term resilience.

Yes indeed…
PM’s call for austerity is praiseworthy. It is said that prevention is better than cure. In times of global crisis we need to strengthen our economy and take proactive steps to ensure that we are better armed to face the challenges that may arise. Kudos to our visionary Prime Minister.

Yes. This will build economic resilience without panic. If we abide by his call, we will be able to save our foreign exchange.

The moratorium on gold has seen the sharpest divide; while younger women in the workforce often support the move toward digital assets, mothers planning upcoming weddings face the emotional and social weight of a “gold-free” ceremony.

Yes, the entire world is facing an energy crisis ..A step towards conservation can save us from worst scenario..
Better less than never.. A judicial use of resources is the need of hour..

Tapasya for Atmanirbhar Bharat!

I whole heartedly support our PM Modi Ji’s appeal
This appeal is not just from the PM, it’s a responsibility for all 1.4 billion Indians. 🤝A strong Nation is truly built from small smart habits. TODAY’S SAVINGS= TOMORROW’S STRONG INDIA. This is the tapasya for Aatmanirbhar Bharat.. I fully support this appeal.🤝

Mrs. Seema Khatri, Retired Teacher, BVMCL Nagpur.

Conversely, female educators and students worry about the “digital divide” resurfacing with a shift back to online schooling.

I agree with our PM. Till now nobody had felt the pain of gas and oil shortage as our neighbours are feeling across border. Just because our PM working day and night to pass every Indian ship from Stait of Hormuz. Can’t we as citizen be well prepared with alternatives during shortage? I feel pm should just double the air fare.

Professionals have largely cheered the return to Work From Home (WFH), citing a better work-life balance and the elimination of unsafe or exhausting commutes.

I think any leader will want to safeguard his citizens in times of war especially when he has little control over the warring nations. I really do not find anything wrong with it.

*Work from home – more flexibility, better efficiency, better results.

*no to gold purchases- no point in keeping them safe in locker. Invest in stocks.

*save petrol and diesel- need of the hour, clean environment, improved health.

*use less oil- this is what the doctors have been advising since long. Health is wealth.

*organic farming- Healthy foods, improved lifestyle.

*avoid foreign brands- made in India 🇮🇳 . So many options available.

*Explore India, avoid foreign trips- Yes, India is very beautiful and culturally very rich. Kashmir is winters is far beautiful than Switzerland, North East is strikingly beautiful. There are so many hidden gems in India.

  • An employee quotes !

Few suggestions by Government/ Private sectors  employees from metropolitan cities.

  1. There should be strict curtailment in government offices.
  2. Officers are living in staff quarters as neighbours. But each is using a separate government vehicle to commute, why? They can use car pool.
  3. Public transport takes time especially when you are not staying near a metro or office is far from metro station. In such cases own car is the only option left.

Overall, the reaction is one of cautious resilience—a willingness to sacrifice for the nation, provided the infrastructure for public transport and digital access supports their daily lives.
