Stabbed at 30,000 Feet: Smit Machchhar’s Fight to Save 174 Lives
Blood in the cockpit, a terrifying descent—and extraordinary courage that brought the flight safely down
A Routine Flight Turns Into a Fight for Survival
What began as a routine flydubai journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency when a violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit.
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot commanding Flight FZ1073, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot. Israeli officials and multiple news reports said the co-pilot allegedly attempted to take control of the aircraft, triggering a dangerous loss of altitude.

According to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Smit Machchhar was stabbed by his Omani co-pilot with a CRASH AXE not a knife. The axe is a tool already present on the aircraft as part of its emergency equipment.
My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery.
Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air…

Machchhar’s Presence of Mind
Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to respond during the crisis. Reports say the aircraft plunged sharply—around 14,000 feet according to Reuters, while some other reports have cited a larger figure—before the situation was brought under control.
One of the crucial moments came when the cockpit door was opened. Passengers and crew were then able to enter and help restrain the attacker. Machchhar’s actions gave others the opportunity to intervene before the situation could become an aviation catastrophe.
Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO.
In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others.

Passengers and Off-Duty Professionals Step In
The rescue effort was not the work of one person alone. Passengers and crew members helped overpower the attacking pilot, while other pilots who happened to be travelling on the aircraft assisted with the emergency.
The aircraft was eventually diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All 174 passengers survived.
An Israeli dentist travelling as a passenger also helped treat Machchhar after the attack. The combination of the captain’s actions, passenger intervention, crew response and the assistance of qualified professionals helped prevent a potentially devastating outcome.
“The brave Indian pilot is in very bad shape, but he had the sense to, amazing, to, in a way he was a HERO”: Donald Trump praises Indian pilot Smit Machchhar. He also praised the Israeli passenger who overpowered the terrorist. pic.twitter.com/0NgBRnq6ea

What We Know—and What We Don’t
Machchhar underwent surgery and has been reported to be in stable condition. He has been widely praised for his courage, including by Indian and Israeli leaders.
An Israeli Dentist flying in the plane, Shota Musaev said “He was covered in cuts. His head and hands were practically sliced open, almost severed in two.”Mosaev immediate priority was to control bleeding.
However, social-media versions of the incident have added details that have not been independently established, including claims about the co-pilot’s religion and an alleged religious slogan. Those claims should not be presented as facts while investigators determine what happened and why.
Courage Without Borders
The incident is ultimately a story of extraordinary presence of mind under extreme pressure. Captain Smit Machchhar’s response, together with the intervention of passengers, crew and other professionals aboard the aircraft, helped bring a frightening cockpit emergency to a safe landing.
His bravery deserves recognition—but so does the collective response that helped bring approximately 180 people safely through one of the most frightening moments imaginable aboard a commercial flight.
