History is a Lie: 6 “Facts” You Got Totally Wrong

The real truth behind the world's most famous figures .

History is a Lie: 6 “Facts” You Got Totally Wrong. Our collective memory is full of historical “facts” that are actually nothing more than well-traveled rumors. Over time, simplified narratives replace complex truths, turning historical figures into caricatures. From art to science, taking a closer look at the history books reveals that reality is often much more nuanced than the legends we are taught.

Artistic Misconceptions: Disney and Van Gogh

We often credit singular geniuses for massive cultural milestones, but history is rarely a solo act. For generations, the public believed Walt Disney single-handedly drew Mickey Mouse.

In reality, while Disney provided the concept and the voice, the iconic character was physically designed and animated by the company’s chief animator, Ub Iwerks.

Similarly, the tragic lore of Vincent van Gogh has been heavily romanticized. The popular myth states that the tortured artist completely severed his own ear in a fit of madness.

Historical documentation suggests a less extreme, though still tragic, reality: he actually only cut off the lower tip of his left earlobe.

Geopolitics and Tall Tales: Napoleon and Cleopatra

Some myths are born out of wartime propaganda or cultural misunderstandings. Take Napoleon Bonaparte, famously remembered as an exceptionally short man—a complex even named after him.

However, the French Emperor stood at roughly 1.7 meters (about 5’7″), which was entirely average, if not slightly above average, for a Frenchman in the early 19th century. The rumor was largely fueled by British caricature art and differences between French and British measuring units.

Further back in history, Cleopatra is universally remembered as the ultimate Egyptian queen. While she ruled Egypt, ethnically she was not Egyptian at all.

She was of Greek Macedonian ancestry, a direct descendant of Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander the Great’s generals.

Scientific Realities: Einstein and Newton

Even the world of science isn’t immune to fabrication. A comforting myth for struggling students is that Albert Einstein failed math or was an underachiever in school.

This is entirely false; Einstein excelled in science and mathematics from a very young age, mastery that eventually led to his revolutionary theories.

Likewise, Sir Isaac Newton did not formulate the theory of gravity because an apple violently smacked him on the head.

According to contemporary accounts, Newton simply watched an apple fall straight to the ground from a nearby window, which prompted him to wonder why objects always fall perpendicular to the earth.
